Just getting on the soap box here. AM i the only one who thinks the Magpul handguard is ugly as anything? I think they look awful and are also a two piece polymer- neither of which would be cosnidered desirable in my book. I realize they are probably the cheapest handguard you can buy besides the factory plastic ones which i also dislike. Just wondering why I see them on every other AR? What are its advantages that draw so many people to buy them?

It's cheap, it works, and I can hang whatever I want to on it unlike the stock forearm.  I've got one on my Palmetto build with a triangle sight because I couldn't find anything else that served the purpose or felt as good.

It's cheap, light and 100% functional.  Serious improvement over carbine handguards, good heat shields, and tons of modular options.

I am not using one on any rifle I own currently, but I have.  It's no longer for me, but it doesn't take away from the homerun they hit with it.

The Magpul handguard is not light by any means. It's actually heavier than most modern longer rail systems.

Which is my primary complaint with it. It's a bit too fat too. I think it looks awesome though.

Is it that heavy?  At the time I had mine on a midlength, I had removed a Troy drop in.  She is porky, for sure.

It was solid though, I had it on my .308 midlength.  Now, the Troy MRF I ended up putting on that rifle is seriously heavy LOL

Magpul has the rifle length MOE handguards listed at 12.13 oz, that doesn't include the barrel nut/delta ring assembly.

My 15'' Noveske NSR weighs 8.5 oz + barrel nut 3.1 oz = 11.6 oz

Didn't realize they were that heavy.  Damn sight heavier than my Centurions, as well

Well, compared to the Fobus, ARMS, and KAC aftermarket guards of yesterdecade, they're pretty light in comparison. Rails have come a long ways since the MOE's came out even.

porky is a disappointment. Guess i'm going to have to use CAR handguards for my next build, as i'm trying to stay light.

I switched over to the MOE handguard because I wanted a poly handguard to replace the trash that Adams Arms (basic) had on it. The AA handguards were not even notched out (front) for the retaining cap nubs so they would twist like a twizzler in your hands. Utter trash. However, the MOE had proper "locking tabs" that locked into the retaining cap around the nubs and it's been rock solid so far. They're cheap, look good, and they work (as well as a poly handguard will).

OP, you are in the minority on this one. What is your ideal cheap(polymer) mass produced for end?

I generally dont like Magpul stuff; never liked any stock they made/make nor their grips. Pmags are just OK not everything the hype makes them out to be; the MOE trigger guard is also ok. Sights work for BUIS, but I prefer steel. Their actual magpuls are good; never understood why they didnt mold them into the pmag dustcover. Oh well.

But the handguard is fantastic; it has a perfect shape IMO; I never "got" all this new fad of skinny thin FF hand guards with screw-on rails. A hand guard should be wide and flatish on the bottom, taper up to the top. It has a molded in handstop in the front and ears to protect your fingers; it has a really well designed lock up and a nice thick heat shield that sends the heat straight up and out the copious vent holes along the top. The added light kit and FVG add versatility in an inexpensive package. The CAR MOE I have here weighs 6.5oz.; not heavy at all IMO. I think it looks, and performs, very well.

I like the MOE hand guard and it's the only HG I'll use if I'm not going to run a rail. MOE HGs fit my hand better plus I can mount a light and grip if I need to and I think they look better than the standard HGs. I'm not into the whole lightweight craze so the MOE's weight isn't a concern.

After the responses i realize Im in the minority. If I were forced to have a polymer fore end I would rather have the CAR handguard. And to all who sport the Magpul handguard you may very well have a very functional  rifle and some still look really nice, Ill just never put them on any of mine. But to every man his own

My Favorite Hand guard, I don't like quad rails nor the stock. I am a huge fan of everything Magpul

You may be in the minority but you aren't alone.  I love most of Magpul's stuff....but those MOE handguards are about the ugliest thing next to the old Lone Star handguards.
