I want to change out my railed gas block with a low profile gas block and add a 12" hand guard.
What is the big difference between a regular low profile gas block and a micro gas block other than the length and weight? Is there a benefit of one over the other? |

What is the big difference between a regular low profile gas block and a micro gas block other than the length and weight? Is there a benefit of one over the other? In my limited experience I can tell you the difference for me is negligible at best. The full length low profiles you see were designed that way to cover the factory taper pin holes that you would be left with if your rifle came equipped with a fixed front sight. And as far as I know that's the main reason you would choose it over the micro sized ones. Personally have run the micro style both clamp and setscrew type with no issues whatsoever. Just keep in mind that the clamp models are usually bulkier and won't fit under some of the newer generations of super slim free floats. (I had a clamp on YHM I had to seriously grind on to get under a MI Gen2SS) I now use a Troy micro and it's a great piece. |

Thanks for the response. Is there really a difference between manufactures of gas blocks? Well.....Yes....and NO. There are several products out there that are so similar it would be like splitting hairs. I say as long as you stick with a brand that has a good reputation you should be good to go. Don''t buy junk from eBay and the like. Personally?? Honestly?? Truth of the matter is I have installed several of the YHM low-profiles with zero issues. They are almost the cheapest you can buy. They fit well and there is no need to spend anymore than you can pick one of those up for. I am using a Troy because it wasn't stupid expensive and was in stock when I was buying items at the time. I think it was about $35. I honestly can't tell the difference between it and the $25 YHM's I've used in the past. I mention those in particular because I have first hand experience with them and they haven't let me down. I say save the big money for somewhere else, and buy a YHM. You can thank me later...LOL Edited to Add..... Do you have a standard .750" barrel diameter? I'm assuming you do. Most do. Unless you are running a real skinny pencil barrel or a really big bull barrel, the .750" should be what you need. After you double check to be sure, order THIS YHM HERE and call it good. You can spend more money, but it would be wasted in my humble opinion. YMMV. |
