I bought an upper recently with an Alpha shooting sports nitrided barrel. Got it this weekend and was wondering if there was a way to confirm it was is in fact a nitrided (or alpha shooting sports for that matter) barrel.
16" midlength .625 with .750 gas seat which meets the profile, but there are no roll marks or any markings for that matter and the exterior finish appears phosphated and not nitrided Any ideas on what to look for? |

Phosphate has a sparkly appearance when looked at closely, alnost as if theres very small metal flakes in the color.
Nitride is straight black, think of a M&P slide or Glock slide. Thats nitride. Also, the whole point of nitriding is to. Get a durable finish to replace chrome in the barrel, so not only does it give a durable outer finish, but arguably a stronger inside finish. Because of that, the bore will also be black, as should the inside of the barrel extension. If the bore and inside of the extension are also black, 99.9% chance its nitrided. |
| the inside of the barrel extension is black, but us chipping in a few spots, also, the chamber appears more of a gray. On the muzzle end the bore appears black. Ill try to get some pics today and post them up. I contacted Alpha Shooting Sports and am waiting to hear back. The seller insists the barrel was melonited and if that's the case it may have just been done poorly, hoping I can exchange it for a new one |
