I got a PSA upper for work. A middy. The stocks are oversized. I've noticed that before, I think with a bushmaster I handled a few years ago. It think they started coming out about the time that piston conversions started to hit the market. Are they a new standard or are they for allowing clearance for pistons underneath the stocks?

I haven't carried the upper yet so every time I pick it up it feels strange.

If you're referring to the oval M4 hand guards they are nothing new. They were designed that way to accommodate dual heat shields that the mil specified. Many prefer them to the original round hand guards.
