With the cost of ammo and the plethora of 7.62x39 ammo on the shelves what am I missing.

I think I understand the performance issues.  For my application I hunt predators (hogs and yotes) and shoot paper

Is. 7.62 x 39 upper a mistake?

If you build it correctly (or buy a correctly built one) and understand the limits of the round then it can be a good choice. If you plan on shooting the cheap widely available commie ammo you will want an xp hammer spring and enhanced firing pin. The m4 ramps help with feed reliability and ASC magazines are a must. The cheap x39 rounds are not real accurate beyond 100 yards. The better ammo (lapua or hornady sst) will not be great past 250-300 yards (and that's pushing it). The x39 will have decent knockdown power inside 200 yards. If the hogs and dogs you are after fall within that distance then it should work for you.
