I have some questions about barrels. I am in the process of building a new rifle and was looking for some good insight on barrels. More specifically what the differences between a stainless steel barrel and a chrome lined barrel. I know that generally the SS barrel will be more accurate but a melonite coated and chrome lined barrel will last longer.
I guess I am looking for how much more "accurate" will a SS barrel be and how much more "durable" will a standard chrome lined barrel be. On average how many more rounds will a chrome lined barrel last over a SS barrel. Would I even notice the difference in accuracy between barrels being that I am just a casual shooter that is average at best? Let us assume that everything is the same between barrels except one is stainless and the other is chrome lined. Are there any other insights that I might not know about if I went SS? Would I have to be more meticulous in cleaning a SS barrel? With my other rifles I generally clean them between 600-800 rounds down the pipe. Thanks. |
| Non chrome lined barrels will be slightly more accurate....somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/8"-1/4" at 100yd from what I've read here. In other words, not really enough to worry about. Adco made some interesting observations on the durability of SS barrels here. I can tell you from personal experience, the CL barrel is much easier to clean....especially after 600-800rd. |

I have just been using a bore snake on my CL barrel and seems to work just fine. Not hard at all. |
