So I'm in the brainstorming stage of building an AR.  It'll be my tac rifle game gun/defense gun.  I plan to run a 14.5" mid length barrel.  I was planning to run just a standard carbine buffer tube and spring.  However, I was looking at the Vltor A5 buffer system.  Will this work with a 14.5" mid length barrel?  Also, what advantages does it really have.  Obviously, since this will be a game gun, recoil reduction would be nice.  Does it actually make the rifle softer shooting without sacraficing any reliability?  Is it worth the $200+?  I know being worth the price is a very subjective question.  So for a little background, I'm not building my own AR to save money, I'm building it to be exactly what I want.  Thanks for any input and/or information on this system.

A standard carbine receiver extension or A5 will work on the 14.5.  The A5 is suppose to come closer to being like the rifle setup.  Reliability is subjective since the carbine setup has been and does work as is and can be tuned using different buffers weights to the rifle.  Is it worth it IMO no will you notice the recoil difference IMO probably no I hardly notice a rifle from a carbine to begin with recoil is already very light on the AR type rifles.

Off topic what is a "tac rifle game"?

I wouldn't do A5 for a 14.5" middy.
I would want the flexibility of the carbine buffer system (different weights available) in case the rig needed to be tuned to run with specific loads.

The A5 will work with all barrel lengths and gas systems. It may not be what most want, but I have seen it used on shorter barrels to include SBR's with great success.

I've used the A5 system with everything from a 7.5" pistol-length system to 18" rifle-length system. I love it, and will eventually install it on all three of my lowers.

Have one installed on my Noveske 14.5 and love it. Also, the STR will collapse all the way down where as a CTR will be one out, just an FYI.

I run the A5 on my 14.5" middy. Runs great with all the ammo I've put through it. From low-power Tul on up.

I'm also looking for the 7-position receiver extension. Midway's website says that it is expected to be back in stock tomorrow. Nope

Hate to rain on your parade, but tomorrow is 10/11/2012. You still have a month to go.

I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

There's "tac rifle" matches around here.  It's pretty much USPSA style of shooting but with a rifle.  Targets are usually pretty close with the occassional 100-150m shot.  So a shorter, faster swinging gun is more advantageous.  Especially since ther's typically a lot of ports to shoot through.

Hunt used!  I decided I had to have A5 setup after all the recomendations to run it with an SR15 upper.  I quickly found everywhere OOS.  I ended up messaging a guy from a 5+old month post who happened to still have for sale.  Start hunting and you'll find it.

If this lower will be dedicated to the uppper you can get the standard lower to run just fine, if you think you may want to try different uppers on the lower, go with the A5.
Built mine up with a SSA-E trigger and it is the lower that I use for accuracy testing my uppers, no problem with different gas systems, still have not checked it out on a piston upper though.
Eventually i hope to equip all my lowers with upgraded triggers but for now this is how I am doing it.

I'm in Afghanistan right now.  So waiting is no problem.

So it sounds like the A5 system works with what I'm planning to set up.  Now, what does the A5 offer for the money?  I'm not quite tracking the purpose Vltor developed it.  For those that have it and love it, why do you love it?

Yep, my 14.5" middy with an A5  has never not functioned no matter what I fed it
