| I have an A2 stock on my AR 15 going to change it to a carbine stock. Basically not a hard task, but is the original buffer tube just threaded in the reciever? I see nothing else holding it in. Maybe a strap wrench to remove it? If you would let me know, my carbine stock is due in a couple days and need to remove the A2 stock buffer tube. thanks Eddie |

Yes. First, remove the screw on the rear butt plate of the stock. The stock body will then slide off the receiver extension (pulling away from the receiver). Then you just turn the RE counter clockwise to "unscrew" it from the receiver. Just do it by hand, there should be no need for any tools beyond a screwdriver for this job.
ETA: Also make sure you capture the buffer retainer pin (and don't point it at your face) when unscrewing the RE as it is under spring pressure and will go flying as soon as the RE is no longer holding it down. |
| I've never had one that was only hand tight. After you remove the butt stock from the receiver extension, look at the end of the RE. You will see a raised area where the butt stock screw went in and you will notice it is circular with flats on it. Hold down the receiver and use a wrench on the flats to unscrew the RE. I've never had to use a lower vice but I've always had to use a wrench. It should be well beyond hand tight but it should not be lock-tited in or anything like that. As said, watch that buffer retainer and spring or you will be buying a new one once it goes into orbit. |
