I have a dpms upper with a carbine length barrel. I was thinking about installing a free float guard but I do not want the small regular carbine length. Is it possible to exchange my standard front sight with a low profile gas block and install say a 12 inch free float guard? Also would there be any issues doing this?

Nothing to it.  I have a 15" rail on my DPMS carbine.  If you have a standard A-frame sight base you won't even need to buy a gas block.  You can just cut yours down to fit.

You shouldn't have any problems switching your set-up.

The only thing that we need to know to be sure is your barrel length. Actually, we need to know if your flash hider/brake/comp is permanently attached. If it is, then you'll most likely want a 2 piece gas block, which is typically a larger diameter, which requires a larger inner diameter of your free float handguard. The reason you most likely want a two piece gas block is, if you want to make changes after the initial build, only a 2 piece gas block allows this. A one piece gas block cannot be removed if you permanently install a flash hider, unless you want to cut off flash hider and buy a new one, and then have it re-pinned.

If your barrel is 16" already without your muzzle device, then disregard what I've said, and buy a low profile gas block. You can install whichever length handguard you want. Remember to get a front sight to replace.
