Hello everyone,
I just started my first build a couple weekes ago, and have just completed my lower. It is a Spikes lower with a Stag LPK. But I can't for the life of me decide on an upper. I am pretty positive that I want a BCM, but I can't decide between the 14.5 middy and the 16 middy. I also intend to run a DD Omega rail. I intend to use the rifle at the range and as my main shtf weapon. I am trying to use the best parts I can buy that are resonably priced. That being said, I am also building this rifle hoping that it will be my only AR ( wishful thinking I know). So with that in mind, what do you all recommend? If you could only have one rifle for these purposes, which would you choose? If I get the 14.5 with the pinned flash hider, will I still be able to change the rail as long as it is a 2 piece? Thanks in advance for your help! |

Thanks in advance for your help! For me, I dont think you gain anything with the 16" and if you get the pinned flash hider, yes, you can use the omega rail. Can't use the omega x rail, but the standard will work. 14.5 are just a bit more maneuverable imo. |
| I would say to go with the 16'' to start with, that way if you decide you want to try different rails, gas blocks, flash hiders, etc., you can change them out. Then once you've got it to where you're sure you like it, and if that extra 1.5'' feels like too much, then get it pinned. I say that because its your first build, you're gonna want to change stuff out and having a pinned flash hider wont make that any easier, but it may make it harder. |

When you're not sure, go with the longer (or heavier) barrel. If you don't like it, you can always have it cut down, and contoured. |

I would recommend going with the most flexible option. Once you put the rifle together and start shooting it, you might realize that you like a different set up better. If you go with a 16" barrel, you can remove the FH and swap out rails more easily. You may find you don't like the DD rail (not likely, but it could happen). You may find that you like the MOE HG a little better. If you're dead set on the DD Omega, then go with the 14.5. Like others have said, it's a little more maneuverable. Just realize that you're not going to be able to swap out the gas block, or change the comp/FH or change the barrel nut if you're going with another FF rail. You're pretty much locking into that configuration. The mistake I made with my first AR was getting it all tricked out early on without knowing exactly what I wanted. Over the first year I owned it, I began to realize what I liked and didn't like about it and began taking notes on my next one. I ended up selling it and getting the rifle I really wanted. Then I built a few others...but that's a different story. I say, buy simple and don't dump a lot of money into it, until you've shot it a few times and know what you want. |
