So I recently purchased my first AR15, a Colt 6520 bone stock, brand new in the box. I'm looking to mostly make ergonomic and functional upgrades and one of the things on my list is a good quality chrome bolt and carrier. I'm looking for recommendations and I'm looking to spend up to 250 bucks. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jamie.

BTW, is there a forum where people typically introduce themselves?

If you must, look at Young Manufacturing. But there's nothing wrong with your stock Colt bolt and carrier. I'd spend the money on a Geissele or a Wilson trigger instead.

Instead of "upgrading" it...why not take it out and shoot it first? I'd be willing to bet the parts in that rifle will last a lifetime with nothing else needed.

I've actually put 700 rounds through it already but thanks for the help.

I'm really looking at the ease of cleaning factor. If I gain a little smoothness or reliability then that's great too but I shoot a lot and as a result, I clean a lot too so anything that helps with that is desired. I'll take a look at Young Manufacturing. Thanks for the suggestion.

A match grade two-stage trigger is on the list as well, but I kind of like the stock trigger so I'm not in as much of a rush to do that.

WTF, you have a Colt.

Take it easy and just learn to shoot it first.

It will do neither.  Nothing wrong with the Colt BCG

You've introduced yourself

Use the bolt and carrier it came with.

that's a really great AR you bought, don't start fiddle faddling around with it right off the bat. Usually new guys just take good stuff off and put stupid junk on.

Thanks. That's the kind of info I'm looking for, even if I don't decide to go with that particular BCG.

I have a new Colt bolt carrier assembly I have been saving for a precision rifle project.  The chrome is already where it needs to be.

I think some of you folks might be missing the point of what I'm looking to do here. I realize that there's nothing "wrong" with the stock BCG. I'm only looking to make the job of cleaning it less tedious. As I said; any improvement in any other area is just gravy so if I don't realize a benefit elsewhere then I won't lose sleep. I've owned other rifles with chrome internals and they always made clean-up a bit easier and since I shoot anywhere from 300 to 1000 rounds at a time I have my work cut out for me.

C'mon guys, if he was interested in keeping his oem carrier he wouldn't have started this thread. OP, Young Manufacturing makes some great chrome BCGs. Another option is a nickel boron coating, with Spikes and Fail Zero having good products, but too pricey for me.

I seem to get a lot of referral to Young Manufacturing. Looks like I may go that route, though for 135.00 that Stag BCG looks nice and I hear good things about Stag in general. As well as Nickel/Boron I've hear of Ti/Nitride. I'm sure both are big bucks though, Thank you for the serious responses. And as for the "keep it stock" folks, I DO respect your opinions (and it makes me feel good about my purchase), I've just kinda got my mind made up about this.

Try Robar in Phoenix. You send your BCG to them, they coat it and send it back.

Good idea. I do think I want to keep the stock bolt stock though. But that info could come in handy down the road.

This is a good option, as you have a nice bolt already.

I have a couple of the Young's N/M bolt carrier groups. They work just fine. I also have a Spikes chrome BCG I bought from AIM and the chrome feels a bit slicker for some reason. I haven't used that Spikes yet but everything else I tried of theirs has worked well. For someone who owns chrome carriers I admit I only buy on sales as I don't think they are really worth it.

I recently forgot to oil one of my rifles with a Young's BCG and put three hundred rounds through it. It was a pain to clean as you could see carbon and soot stuck to the bolt and it sounded like a rusty hinge when it moved. Had to scrap it with my finger nail to get it off. With a black carrier I wouldn't have seen it so it wouldn't have mattered.
So oil is still important with the chrome.

I own both hard chrome and standard bolt assemblies.  Ive never found it a challenge to clean either.  Have you actually tried cleaning a hard chrome bolt and carrier?  Did you find a significant difference in the cleaning times between the two?  They certainly aren't more ergonomic or functional.

Send your complete Colt BCG to WMD Guns, and have them nickel boron coat it for you.  You get the best of both worlds that way, and best of all, no one here is jumping up your ass about getting rid of Colt parts.

They're trying too tell you that you can do better than 40 y/o technology, if you must have something different try Micro Slick http://www.bandecoatings.com/index.html  Here are all the colors http://www.apwcogan.com/plating-and-refinishing/cerakote-colors-current/, you can be the only one with a stop light red bolt and carrier, sure to put fear into your enemies.    NiB is even better but more $.
Here is a vendor with it on AR15.com  http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_124/551695__NEW__Core_15_Micro_Slick_Hardcore_Combo__179_99.html

I'm going to get two upper receivers done in Armor Black H-190 (a matte finish) next year to use with NiB C and B's.

I purchased a RRA chromed unit for the same reason, ease of cleaning $120.00.   They were chromed for a reason on the first one made.

Yes, I have had weapons with chrome parts and I think they're easier to clean. Not that it's particularly hard to clean non-chromed stuff, but chrome is easier and you can see the results of cleaning much clearer (meaning that if you miss a spot, you know it).

I'll also echo the sentiment to keep your Colt parts and leave them alone.

Meticulous cleaning is not needed.  You shouldn't need all kinds of carbon scrapers and whatnot (especially since a scraper can potentially do more bad than good).  However, if you you want to have a cleaner than average BCG, I'd suggest better living through chemistry along with a sonic cleaner.  If you can't swing a sonic cleaner, soak your BCG in something like Ed's Red or Hoppes #9 Nitro Solvent overnight.
