I would like to upgrade my stock carbine DPMS handguards to a Free-Floating handguard with the ability to add-on rails where and when I want to.

Right now, I have the stock handguards as well as the gas block with the lower-plane rail.

MY question is... Can I put just any handguard on the rifle if I remove the standard gas block and replace it with a low-profile? Will any brand work on the DPMS?  Some of the specific handguards I am considering are the Troy TRX Exteme, the VTAC, the Midwest Industries SS, YHM, and the Samson. Not sure which I will choose yet, but I would like to know what my options are. . . ?

Can I put any length (like an 11") FreeFloat tube on a carbine with a 16" barrel?

I may be looking in all the wrong places, but I feel like I have looked in every corner of ARFcom over and have found very little resources on this subject. Any help for a newbie AR owner would be much appreciated.

The Samson Evolution mounts to a stock barrel nut.  Some of the other options you listed must have the barrel nut changed.

It would be as easy as changing the gas block to a low-profile gas block and cutting off the delta ring.  Here is my 18" Sabre barrel w/ a low pro GB and 12.37" Evo rail.

Thanks BPR!

So if I put the lowpro GB on, I can put a longer FF tube over it?

And..... Will any brand handguard fit on the DPMS, or are only certain brands compatible?

And..... Are there any of the other brands that dont require removing the barrel nut?

I really like the Samson Evolution, but the ones I have seen that are mounted with some rails and accessories, it looks like there is a gap on both sides of the accessory. I guess this is due to the 17 sides? I plan to put a MOE angled fore grip on it, and that seems like the worst at having a gap on both sides. Does anybody else see/have this issue with the Samson EVO?

sorry for going off topic, but i love that rifle.

edit: The Midwest Industries SS tubes are nice. The 12" is the lightest tube out. check this chart out.

Also look into the Daniel Defense MFR; though it is around $230, I'm happy with it.

Yes, by changing out your gas block to a low profile the tube will go over it and cover.  Any brand tube will work with your DPMS, it's just that some of them require a different barrel nut.  I don't know which other brands can use the stock barrel nut.  I also can't help you with the issue on accessories.  The only thing I have mounted to either of my two Evo tubes is a sling mount.

Good luck in your quest.

Thanks again BPR. You do have a very nice set-up. I REALLY like the Samson evolutions and I am starting to lean that way. They have a really goodbalance of all the features I want. It's down to the Samson evo or the Troy Extreme. How long is your Samson?

The one pictured above is a 12.37" on an 18" Sabre barrel.

This one is a 15" on a 20" Sabre barrel.
