| I want to buy a used ar15 milspec rifle in 556.for target practice and causal shooting, but I also want to be able hunt with it also so I know im gonna need a 7.62x39 upper for it also. So my question is of all the lowers out there which is the easiest to get different uppers for? My understanding is that colt uses a different style pin than everybody else so it might not be the one to go with. I'm new to the rifle in this forum but have shot a m16a2 before as I was an army mp and always have a had a soft spot in my heart for colt. But any sugestions are welcome but im not trying to start my gun is better than your gun debate. Thanks |

Why a 7.62x39 for hunting? If your local DEC/DNR allows .223, there are plenty of loads suitable for hunting. There are also plenty of other variants popular for hunting. 6.8SPC, 6.5 Grendel, .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf, .243WSSM are all excellent hunting cartridges. What do you intend to be killing? |

Quoted: Mainly deer possibly elk or moose but I though 7.62x39 was the same as 308 only shorter. I can't afford more than one lower and didn't think I could use any thing bigger on the same lower as a 556 . If I'm mistaking please correct me The cartridges I mentioned will all work just fine on an AR lower. You could swap the upper and go. 7.62x39 isn't a bad choice, it is just that there are better choices out there for your needs. What is the max range you usually encounter while hunting? Do you hunt in dense brush? Do you plan on reloading in the future? One advantage to the 7.62x39 upper is that you could conceivably use that for plinking and hunting. Surplus ammo is fairly cheap and loads appropriate for hunting can be found. You would also save the expense of purchasing a second upper. |
