i have a magpul enhanced trigger guard on one of my ARs and like it.  I am planning on replacing my other standard trigger guard with the magpul....is there any reason to not save $12 and get the plastic MOE version, or should i stick with the original aluminum?

thanks,
advntrjnky

I've got 2 aluminum guards and 5 plastic guards (all Magpuls) and have zero problems with the plastic compared to the aluminum.

On a side note, you want to be looking at the threads that refer to replacing the roll pin with button head screws.

I've used them both and am only getting the plastic ones anymore. Seems just as good.

i agree.  if something hits that thing hard enough to break the polymer guard, then you are in some real suck and you aren't going to be worried about the trigger guard.  i'd bet that the ears on the lower break before the trigger guard.

In the future, everything will be made of plastic. It's that good. So that's what I use.

I have the MOE one and I dont have any issues with it.

I dont have a metal one but it appears that the metal ones do not have the magpul logo on the underside of them so -1 for cool points

I had the same thought and went the MOE route.

I have the aluminum ones installed on all my lowers simply because I prefer a metal part over a plastic one.

Just a few from the search page, but most of the pix have been removed from Photobucket.

One.

Two.

Three.

That's just a quick hit on the subject.

One detail I did differently:  I went to Fastenal and bought 4-40 brass inserts (Part # 0185922, ctrl # 120071177) and I believe a 5/32" size drill bit  for the inserts.  The brass inserts are easier to install in the plastic trigger guards than heli-coils.   I forget which bit size, and I'm working from a 'parts envelope' collection here.  I bought button head screws 4-40 x 3/16 (Part # 24005, ctrl # 120062067) but I'm planning to replace the screws with 4-40 x 1/4 (I don't have a number yet) as the 3/16s are just long enough but I'd be happier with about 2 more turns / side.  I used 3 inserts & screws per lower.  It was easier, though it took more time, than inserting the pin.

cormorantslayer sells screws in the Equipment Exchange, and I believe that if you're doing just one or several lowers it'd be cheaper to buy the screws from him if he's still selling them.  Fastenal was a bit spendy, and I had to buy in bulk and pay shipping to their store even though I was standing at their counter ordering.

I've got non folding, folding aluminum and MOE trigger guards, I use my aluminum ones on my most used carbines, my MOE is on my lesser used carbine.

+1 for the MOE.

I see no need to spend the extra $10.

Both are solid units, no functional difference. If you are building a rifle all in black, go with the aluminum one as it looks damned sleek. If you are going for a non-black gun get the MOE color that is closest and rock on.

I run a couple of the aluminum Magpul trigger guards and like them.

Until thirty seconds ago I didn't know a plastic version existed

You need to get out more.

Seriously, Aim has free shipping on Magpul stuff, but they must be out of the plastic trigger guards right now.  I just got 2 more from them last week or so.

I use the aluminum  enhanced TGs and love them.  Since you can get the plastic ones in different colors I bought some.  I put them on and frankly, I thought they made the rifle look cheap.  I took them off and used Aluma-Hyde II to color the aluminum guards the colors I wanted.  IMO save your money on the plastic ones unless you just want to save a few bucks and don't mind them making your rifle look cheap.  I did not care at all for the mold seams and the Mag-Pul logo on them.  Thumbs down IMO.

I forgot about the logo on the plastic version......i think I'll pass and go with the aluminum again.

thanks for all the other info guys!

Actually, RRA makes a winter metal trigger guard that looks even better. Check it out on their site.

I have an aluminum one and like it. I'm building a carbine now and will buy the MOE one. I can't believe no one's told you to "Get both" yet!

I have one of those and i don't like it.....actually, it is what i am going to replace with the magpul aluminum.  i feel that the RRA style is just too oversized, and my knuckle comes in contact with the rear of it occassionally.  now, if someone made one like POF mills into their billet lowers i would give that a try.  the magpul with the MOE grip fits me nicely with no rub marks/ contact points.
