I really like the look of the monolithic rail set up and was wondering if there is a ff rail that will give me a continuous upper rail and that will extend out past the fsb to allow me to move my hand out farther. The rifle this would go on is a 16" carbine and I would cut the fsb down and make a lo pro gas block out of it so the rail would have to at least cover that up, but I wouldn't care if it even went out far enough to cover the 203 cut out.
that spikes looks like a great deal, but I forgot to mention that I was hoping to find one that didn't require the removal of the barrel nut because I don't have a action block or barrel wrench. I looked in the how to section and saw there was a thread on the Troy MRF forearm and it only required you to cut off the delta ring and clamp the rail over the existing barrel nut. How secure is this type of rail and if I went with a mid lenght rail will it fit over the fsb if I cut it down? I'm sure the Spikes rail is cheaper than the Troy, but I will loose most of the savings from buying the extra tools needed to install it.
Your limited to choices becuae many of them have their own barrel nut/jam nut. I kinda had the same reasoning going as you, I preferred the DD because I could drop it in without taking anything apart. Then I read on their site that the 12" I sought may not work with a low profile gas block, so I looked at MI, Troy, YHM....they had the ones that were monolithic but required a change of barrel nut or they had non monos where you didn't. So I decided on the Spikes, the price is really good. at 215.00 or so and it comes with some rail ladders.
