I'm new to the AR world. I'm considering purchasing one for home defense, target and hunting. I know I want one in 223 with a 16" barrel, but I'm confused about the gas type v/s the piston type. I'm thinking about the Ruger because of the options it comes with but have considered the S&W. I have a friend that has a DPMS in 308 and the Ruger SR556 and two other friends that have Bushmasters. I want to purchase one that is reliable and versatile. I plan on changing the upper with a different caliber in the future but don't know the do's and don'ts.
Ruger is very heavy. Gas vs piston, ahhh forget it, gas has been around for a long time without any problems. For the money I would look at the lower end Daniel Defense models,(without rails) and if you want rails the M4 DD model is around $1300.00. Smith makes a fine gun, I have a 15t and might add a Daniel Defense M4 because they are so light and well balanced.
Thanks for the advise. I agree with you on the weight of the ruger, very heavy. I've never heard of the Daniel Defense brand you speak of, I will check them out. Weight is a big factor, I want something light. I still like the S&W, but want to weigh all my options. Thanks again.
Don't mean to be a jerk here, but this question is like "which car should I buy?" There are so many choices. Even if you give the parameters you are wanting to use it for, there are still many many good choices. Some will say Ford, others Chevy, others Toyota. A lot also depends on how much you want to spend. I've really been impressed with the LMT rifles. BCM apparently makes a quality rifle that is affordable, also with many configuration options. Just get on their website and look around. You may want to consider a mid-length gas system for a 16" rifle. It won't have the M4 cut-out, but folks seem to think it has a bit less recoil, or is not as hard on the bolt. Whatever you do, don't rush into it. Look around, talk to folks, try to shoot a few of them and see what you like. All the while saving up your money.
