I have a pretty new M&P15 with only about 400-500 rounds through it. When I bought the rifle I ordered the Troy drop in handguard. I have recently noticed the handguard is loose. The play is coming from the handguard cap which the cap itself moves around about a 1/16", thus causing play in the handguard. Everything is tight at the barrel nut. Is this normal for the cap to move loosely, or is there something wrong with the cap itself? Thanks for any help.

A little play is to be expected because the HG Cap is only held between the Front Sight Block and a Step in the barrel. It is kept from rotating using the gas tube.

Some are loose and some are tight.  I have Colt and FN barrels both ways.  My 6920 is tight.  The last M4 I was issued was loose till the KAS was put on then I could not tell.

I have fixed one on a Colt by using Brownells Acraglass and tinting it black.  Apply around the barrel hole in the cap and move cap around to spread the glass and let dry standing on the muzzle.  Quick and easy but do not get on the gas tube.

Once you put on the new rail you prolly won't be able to notice it. It's normal from most manufacturers.

Thanks for the replays. I guess im going to just pick up a free float rail, and not even have to worry about it.
