I'm looking for a free floated rifle length hand guard. I'm not interested in some sort of massive quad rail system covered with doo-dads. I just want something I can attach a bi-pod to.

It turns out, that this is a surprisingly hard item to find. Can any of you give suggestions on where to look?

What's your budget?  The JP/VTAC is the best non-rail, free float handguard that I have used.

Look at an older Armalite or a Troy TRX Extreme.  Another option would be an old school aluminum float tube - cheap, too.

Five minutes with a drill and tap will allow you to attach a bipod to a $50 DPMS floater tube.

If you need one that allows you to bolt one on, then look to JP, Troy, YHM, MI, etc.

I'd like to spend $150 or less.

Look at YHM's offerings, talk with Brightflashlights in the Industry Forum.

I've got the YHM-5005, it's excellent.  Smooth except for the top and the muzzle end.  Paid $90 for it second hand in perfect condition.  Often availble from dealers for $110.

Do i need to order any other hardware to install it?

Nope.  Other than a wrench and hammer (and punch) to get you A2 sight off.  The end cap looks good also.

I like the DCM but its harder to mount a bipod on that.  Maintain factory appearance and comfort, CMP legal...  The ultimate in my book.  But needs vary...

I have the YHM Diamond series rifle length free float rail and really like it.  It is on sale here.
To attach the bi-pod you will need a rail adapter.  Relatively inexpensive if you get one that isn't quick detach.

Go on EE or buy a cheap ass no-name aluminum FF tube.

Install it, then get the indexing right, then pop the tube off and drill a hole, install the sling stud (bipod mount), and you are good to go.

KNS makes the stud

$50 solution to what could be a $200 project.

I'd HIGHLY recommend getting their wrench for installation.

I guess this rules out the PRI then; too bad, they are really nice.

Do my idea of a modified cheapo free float tube..

A local gunsmith will install the FF tube and shave down your FSB for $50-75ish.

Either way, unless you have a barrel nut wrench ($30), a torque wrench ($35), an AR action block ($35), a vice ($40), and a work bench you can fucking wail on ($priceless), the gunsmith route might be the way to go for you.

I'm kinda stupid here when it comes to free float tubes, forearms and hand guards.  Don't know much about hanging all kinds of stuff off of them.
With the exception of NM types.  It has no hangers
You can retain the original guards (modified), sometimes same FSB and still add a stud for a bi-pod.  You CAN retain the liners.
Problem is, you still have to remove the barrel, FSB and FH,  to install the new barrel nut.  Don't know (or care) if the others require this.

So what you are saying is that one could invest in the tools of a lifetime for only twice what they might pay someone to do the job once?

+1 I could be considered a bit of a "tool junkie".

Which rail are you talking about?  YHM?  and if so why would you use they're wrench instead of say a DPMS or Bushmaster armorers tool?

I'm getting ready to install a YHM diamond rail on my BCM upper and I have a Bushy armorers tool.  I think it has three points of contact for the free float nut.

Because the YHM rails I've installed needed a special wrench to tighten the lock nut against the rail.

You still need the armorers tool to install the barrel nut.  But to tighten the lock nut the YHM is the best/easiest way.

I think I gotcha.  In another thread someone said you could use flat head screwdriver and a hammer to tighten that piece.  Sounds like a lot of potential for scratching or gouging it though.  The YHM tool even seems like it would gouge that as well.

Blackheart's new tube takes JP's a step further, by not requiring red Loctite.
