I'm looking to pick one up, and wanted to hear from some folks using it and their thoughts.
How well does it "lock up"? Less rotation than plastic hand guards?

Thanks

I bought one a while back, it fits tighter than any plastic one. You will  like it.

Have mine for over a year and it's still tight. I shoot that rifle a lot too.

I can vouch for all of the above.

I had the 7" carbine drop-in, and it locked up tight as hell.  Zero movement.

I now have the 9" drop-in, and the same applies.  Zero movement.

I don't need free-float for my uses, so the Troy does everything I need and the price is right.

+1 on the above. The best that I have found for a DI

Sounds good.

I look forward to picking it up soon. Eventually I want something up to and beyond 13", but funds won't allow for awhile.
I'm pretty good sized, and really like to grab a hold of the weapon further down the barrel, but oh well. Some day.

Will one of Magpul's textured rail covers go the length of the MRF-DI?

If the rail is a carbine rail..........then yes.  See below:

I put one on recently. When I first installed it there was zero movement even without the screws. The next day I noticed ever so slight movement when directly trying to move it. I am still happy with it for the money but mine does have a hair of movement.

Unless you do surgery on the rail panels they won't go straight on. The goofy spacing on the rail slots does not match the ribs on the inside of magpul covers.
The pic you show is from magpul and is not a troy rail. Looks like a KAC rail.

"Goofy spacing"?

Are those specific rail covers made for the KAC rail?  It says nothing about that in the description on Magpul's site.  I was assuming they fit any standard picatinny rail, like their other rail covers.  My Magpul ladders fit my Troy.

Yes, goofy spacing as in non picatinny spec.

Yes the XT covers  will fit any standard picatinny rail. The Troy is not true picatinny spec due to the areas around the sling swivel holes and where the halves bolt together.
Have you looked at how KAC rail? They have even spacing all the way across as do most other rails out there.

I know they don't fit as I had one and tried the magpuls XT covers on it. It takes some slicing with an exacto knife to get them on. The XTM do panels fit. ladder types will fit in the areas between the sling holes but will require trimming to go full length if you want it to fit properly.

You're right.  I do remember those little "humps" where the ladder doesn't sit flush on the 9 and 3 o'clock rails.

I made a couple mods to make it better.  I replaced the lousy flat head screwdriver screws with allen head cap screws.  Then when I was installing my MAGPUL ladder rail covers I trimmed out the horizontal piece of the ladder and left the length wise section.  This allows the ladder to cover the last section of rail and still allows access to the quick release holes.  I think its a great drop in rail, just needed a couple mods to make it perfect.

Hopefully, the actual rails are in spec minus the QD feature.  Maybe you'll be able to get a VFG on it.
