I'm going to get a spare bolt for my AR. Seemed to me that a chromed carrier should run smoother, perhaps a chromed bolt too.

Are they any disadvantages to having these parts hard chromed ?

Anyone know of a good brand of off the shelf chromed bolts and carriers ?

For the extra $100 or so you pay for a chromed bolt and carrier, all you get for that extra cash is a bolt and carrier that is easier to clean.

Save the money and get a Bravo Company BCG, then buy some magazines or ammo with the money you saved.

Just my $0.02

Ionbond is a much better way to go.  Its black, its tougher, and its not usually found on DPMS parts.

Ionbond is the way to go - even sent my Bravo Co bolt and carrier out to get the finish

Love my Spike's / Young MFG chrome BCGs.

The bling takes a bit to get used to, but dang it's worth every penny come cleaning time.  Not to mention they run much smoother (lubricity in the upper)
Plus the BCGs themselves are very high quality.

I'll have to check out the ION bond stuff for my other ARs.

I've had a bolt carrier group and a barrel done in the ION bond process.
I highly recommend it. You can run your weapon with very little to no lube.

Don't waste the money. Get a standard F/A quality BCG from the likes of BCM or LMT and be done with it. You will NEVER need anything more than that.

You will never NEED a better can than a Hyundai either.  So do not buy a Benz, BMW, or any other high end car.  You will never need it.

This has been brought up time & time again! Hard Chrome or Ion Bond has a lower drag coefficient, basically its "slicker". Which means more reliable. A side benefit is it's easier to clean.

I had a BCG finished by Ionbond.  It was not any easier to clean and didn't notice smoother cycling.  It was a waste of money. Ionbond is an excellent finish and good for a lot of things, a BCG isn't one of them.

A Young chromed BCG is around $175/$230 for regular or National Match, not much more than a BCM BCG at $150.  As filthy as the impingement system is, I like a BCG that's easier to clean.  I hear Chris and Travis at Magpul run them, good enough for me.

My experiences are the opposite since the BCM Ion Bond BCG I have is easier to clean & requires less lube than my non-Ion bond BCGs. I do not have a chrome BCG.
