Hey guys, I just got a Troy MRF 13.8" rail and installed it on my 20" Govt barreled upper, using a new Daniel Defense upper receiver.  Two big problems I see ... just wondering if others have seen this, and what to do about it.

First, I can't get the rail level.  No matter what torque pattern I use for the bolts, and keeping the barrel centered in the rail while doing so, as soon as I let go the barrel rises to about 1/4" above center.  So the rail is sloping down toward the front.  That's a big problem since I am wanting this to be an iron sights only gun, with a LMT front sight on the end of the rail.

Second problem, even after torquing the rail and barrel nut down tight, the rail will wiggle up and down when force is applied.  Obviously that'll completely destroy accuracy with iron sights.

Is this just a bad rail, or are these issues normal?  I'm already wishing I went with a DD Lite rail, like I have on one of my 6.8 builds ... now that's a solid and perfectly designed rail!

Sounds like you may have a suspect rail there. I would call Troy and explain your situation to them. They will make it right.

I had similar issues with two Troy rail systems, in short the rails would not sit level with the top of the receiver, even when one of them was installed by Troy after I sent the first rail to them with my upper receiver.   I will admit that Troy provided some excellent customer service and replaced my rail for free when I sent it back but I didn't want to have to do it again and risk having the same issue.  For me the easy and simple solution was to just sell the Troy rail and buy a LaRue Tactical rail and it was a good decision.  The LaRue rail was pretty easy to install and when it was all said and done it was rock solid, level, centered, and generally good to go....unlike the Troy rail.

Good to hear they offer great support, I just wrote them to see what they suggest.

I like the rail, would be happy if it would just work right ... but if it doesn't, a Larue or DD will be in my future.  Only other thing I can think to try is a new barrel nut, maybe the one I'm using isn't straight.

I might have just 'fixed' it.

When you tighten down a barrel nut, you're bound to have the tool slip off once or twice and slightly round those teeth on the nut.  On mine that made the front edge of the nut have a couple rough spots.  I took a file to the nut and trued the front edge, then re-installed the rail and it lines up straight this time.  It's also much more solid, doesn't wiggle up and down.

Maybe it was that simple?  I guess the test will come once I zero the rifle, then see if it holds a zero or if the rail does in fact wiggle.

Good catch! So the burrs were not allowing the barrel nut teeth to fit into the cut in the rail locking block correctly?

Keep us up to date on how it performs at the range.
