I want to get a 22 cal. conversion kit for my AR just for plinking around, squirrel hunting, etc... Can I get some opinions on these conversion kits? And... which manufacturer has the best product? I have observed the only two product names, for this conversion, to be the "Ciener" and the "Brownells". Any more out there to be recommended? I borrowed my cousin's Brownell conversion. I never had an FTF or FTE, just the typical powder buildup expected from the .22 LR. The Brownell seemed to perform ok. I was just wondering if the Ciener brand was either more or less durable, etc..etc. Give me some pro advice on the brands, or if I should stay away from the 22 conversion completely. I don't know if they are detrimental to the 5.56/223 AR or not. Thanks.

Spikes Tactical ... there is none better (is that grammatically correct?)

This is what I have, though I hear good things about the CMMG conversion as well.

Rather than retype everything I'll just point you to this thread:

$200 is not bad for some good plinking full.  Thats also the price of a Ruger 10/22 and you actually have two rifles.  No rezeroing scopes between rounds, and you can get a AR type Tapco stock for the 10/22 if you want similar feel.

Skip the conversion and get yourself a Spike's Tactical dedicated .22LR upper. It has the proper twist rate which is 1 in 16" for better accuracy.

I hear this all the time but I get really good accuracy with my conversion. I shoot 2.5"x2.5" steel circles at about 30 yards with irons. I have about a 75% hit percentage. It might not be as accurate as the dedicated upper but its good enough IMO.

ETA: Oh yea, I have a Noveske 14.5" 1-7 twist

I agree, I shoot my conversion in 1:9 twist barrels.  Get about 1" to 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards.  If you need better accuracy than that get a complete .22 LR rifle for less than the cost of a Spikes upper.  For $600 you can get a Kimber bolt action .22LR from the CMP that will shoot 1 hole groups at 50 yards.

I don't have to rezero when putting in the conversion kit.  It shoots 1" lower than the .223 does at 25 yards.

You want to discuss Accurate Rimfire's I'll drag out these:

Savage 93R17FV

Anschutz 1607/1613 and TC Contender

They are a great way to get some cheap practice with your AR15.   I paid $139 for my Ciener kit from Midway.

Just make sure when you're done shooting with a .22LR conversion, shoot at least 5 to 10 rounds of 5.56/.223 to clear out your gas tube. If this is your only SHTF AR, the last thing you want is for it to malfunction on you when it's most needed.
