Can you guys tell me who makes a slickside upper besides DPMS?  I know Fulton Armory has them as complete uppers, but not sure if they sell them as a stripped reciever only.  Thanks!

Some I have used:

Top one is from Fulton Armory and the other two are 9mm flattop upper receivers drilled for a gas tube hole. And yes, Fulton does sell them stripped.

ETA - Les Baer makes one with a brass deflector but no forward assist:

Thanks guys.  I guess I should specify that it's not for a retro build, I just like the clean lines and feel the forward assist doesn't really apply to a precision/varmint gun.  It's looking like Fulton is the place to go.  I haven't ever held a DPMS, but I've read that they are pretty rough in the fit/finish dept.

My unofficial sources tell me that DPMS makes the Fulton Armory slickside upper.

That being said, I have one on a carbine and I really like it.

I've heard that before and wondered a bit, because DPMS doesn't offer it themselves.

For the OP, the upper that Zeke posted is the same as the top one in my first photo and is a 604 upper. Until this month Fulton was the only source of new ones, but NoDak Spud now offers them as well. Original 1960s 604s pop up on Gunbroker and in the Equipment Exchange on a fairly regular basis.

I have a Sun Devil flatty slickside on my shorty. Nothing wrong with the DPMS, have one on my lightweight.

Don't know where you got that idea. My DPMS catalog shows it.

And yes EVERYTHING Fulton sells in the AR15 catagory, other than their lower recievers and one or two of their specialty barrels, is nothing but stock DPMS. Fulton won't admit it but it's perfactly true.

And their hoses ass attitude about "protecting our sources" is the main reason I won't spend a penny w/them.

OK, I've never seen the print catalog; I've only perused their online offerings. One way or another the upper does its job for me.

I see VLTOR makes one, too.  Is the brass deflector really necessary?  I guess I've never shot one without it and wouldn't have ever been paying attention anyways.

I've been shooting early version ARs (and M16s) for years, w/o the deflector, and I'm left handed

The only non humped piece that's ever given me anything close to a problem was the XM177E2 piece in my armory. It'd bounce empties off my earmuffs, and every thousand rounds or so, the case would bounce off the muff onto my neck. The other 999 bounced the other way.

Problem solved by installing Wolff HD extractor springs in all my ARs. Changes the ejection angle to more or less straight out. In fact, on the pieces w/the hump, the empties just barely touch the extreme outer edge of the hump, and the tiny brass marks wipe right off w/a fingertip rub.
