If I get an upper and just buy a new BCG to drop in, that is fine, right?  I know that in other weapons, you have to get a bolt specifically headspaced for the weapon, but I don't believe that's the case with AR's.  Could somebody let me know if that's correct?

Sweet.  Thanks.

While it's probably a good idea if you can head space it, I rarely do and I've not had a bad one yet.

OK, I'm totally lost on this one.

Fortunately, I can translate into English:

1) Put two pieces of vinyl electric tape on the base of a spent round
2) Trim off excess so that it is flush around the rim and place into chamber.
3) Release the bolt while holding the charging handle back, ride the charging handle forward about one inch before closing the bolt.
4) Release the charging handle, the bolt should not close; a push from the forward assist should close the bolt.
5) If it does close without the assist, place a third piece of tape over the previous two and try again.

If you are really in doubt (i.e., persistent light primer strikes, or heavily dimpled primers) the buy a set of go/no go guages.  If you buy a barrel/ext and bolt from a reputable manufacturer, the rifle should have no headspace issues.

This is something I've been wondering as well. I'm about to have an upper coming my way in a matter of days, my gunsmith said it was improperly headspaced, but while I was inspecting the entire rifle, I found that the buffer detent had popped up into the BCG which didn't allow the bolt to close fully. I believe this may have been the issue he saw and wrote off as a headspacing issue. Would it be best to get some gauges or do you think the bolt/barrel combo are probably correct and he was just too busy to realize what had really happened? Always better safe than sorry but the parts, if I remember correctly, are of reputable manufacture. Should I try closing on a dummy round? Luckily for me, if it is improperly headspaced, the chamber is too short and can be reamed to the proper dimensions, but I have a suspicion that there is really no problem. Which would be great news for me. Any ideas on this one?
