if its a FF rail, then I would suggest removing the handguard cap. if its handguards, it should fit in

Since he is trying to get his RAS to slip into the front cap I would say it is not a free
floaing handguard.

I remember being in a rush once and leaving the spring tab outside the h/g cap,
but most people have issues with the barrel nut clamp - not the other end.

Is your HG cap triangular or round?

round.  it seems that my barrel contour my be a little on the heavy side near the cap.  i dremelled a little of of the handguard and it fits in the front now.

2 people.

I usually take the cap screw out of the rail and keep the locking arm
pushed down/out of the way with an allen wrench or something similar.
I also install it with the muzzle pointed skyward. Easier for me to "three hand" it.

Once everything is lined up and the locking arm is in the right spot, I reinsert
the (loctited) cap screw and tighten to spec.

*The barrel diameter is a known issue - but I forget which one. You have an HBAR perhaps?

THE KAC RAS WAS DESIGNED FOR THE M4 CONTOUR BARREL, WHICH IS 0.835" - 0.855" JUST AFT OF THE FRONT SIGHT TOWER. IF YOUR BARREL IS NOT OF THIS CONTOUR AT THIS POINT, THE KAC M4 RAS WILL NOT FIT.

THE M4 KAC RIS AS USED BY SOCOM WILL FIT ANY CONTOUR BARREL.

+1

I have a RIS on my 11.5-inch HBAR for just this reason while the RAS fits the M4 Carbine just fine.  The rifle length RAS will fit an HBAR just fine but it does not fit a CMP profile barrel but anybody that that heavy of a barrel likely wants a float tube anyways..
