is this task a pain in the ass or is it pretty simple? never done it obviously. thinking about replacing my 1:9 with a 1:7

You will need a barrel wrench and upper block at a minimum, along with a couple of punches.  Not hard with the right tools, next to impossible without.  About a 15 minute job.  Post in the hometown forum to see if someone near you has the tools and could help.

I wouldn't mess around with something like that.

Just buy an armorer's wrench and don't mess around with an add on that cost just as much.

It is easy to change a barrel if you have the block and and the wrench.

The only hard part is lining up the sprocket holes for the gas tube.    Sometimes they line up just right after tightening and sometimes you have play around.
