| I have a Stag upper with a Stag bolt that I use as a duty rifle. I want to send my bolt into Robar to have it refinished, but I can't have the rifle be out of commision for 4-6 weeks. How much harm will be done to the rifle if I exchange the bolt for another one with limited fire while my bolt is being refinished? Would it make more sense to send the new bolt in to be refinished, then use it as my permanent bolt in my rifle. Currently the rifle has about 2000 rounds through it. |

The book answer is: Don't exchange bolts between rifles without checking headspace. It's possible for the new bolt to leave the brass unsupported enough that the brass would rupture during firing, destroying the rifle. No likely, but possible. Check here: www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=8&f=11 for somebody in your area that has a USGI FIELD gauge. Checking headspace only takes 30 seconds or so. BSW |
