I just got my Troy last week or so.  I haven't shot with it yet, but I noticed something while looking at my gun today.  The rail seems to be ever so slightly off center.  Now before anyone asks;

-Yes, I took them off and put them back on a couple times to try to readjust them

-I tried adjusting the top rail after I put it on, before I put the bottom on

-After I put them on, I pulled on the delta ring down a little, to try to adjust it

-I tried slapping it a little, and calling it a bitch

No matter what I tried, it always settled back into the same exact spot, and a little off center.  Then I noticed that looking at my Eotech, from the front, it seems canted a tiny bit, due to the rail being slightly off-center.  (The Eotech is mounted with a small portion of the battery compartment over the rail. pic at the bottom).  I tried mounting the Eotech on the upper only, with no part of it on the Troy, and the cant is gone.

I know the pics are kinda shitty, but you should be able to get the idea.  If not, I'll try to retake them.

Am I being too anal?  I mean, it's just a tiny bit off, but the fact that I can see it canting the Eotech itself is a little unnerving.

Here, you can see the slight cant:

A little better shot of the same:

From the side, everything looks OK:

Shot of the slight Eotech cant (this pic doesn't do it justice. It's more noticeable in person.  I'll try to get a better pic:

This is just to show where the Eotech sits, in relation to the Troy:

I know this is not a FF rail, and wasn't depending on it to be solid enough for an optic.  But I was told that as long as the actual part of the Eotech that tightens down, is over my upper, and not the rail, the Troy wouldn't affect it.  But it is.

I can't really tell from the pics if your rails are canted. Eotech's, however, have been known to have canting problems when they sit on the rail. If you have a detachable carry handle try bridging t he gap between the upper & hand guards & see if you have the same issue. If the rail is indeed canted then your barrel may be over torqued. I had this issue with my very first civ AR & had to send it back for repair. My rail was very tight when both halves were installed & the FSB was crooked in comparison with the rails.

Wow, and people say YHM isn't up to par...  The Troy koolaid drinkers must be dying about now...

That is unacceptable, regardless of the manufacturer.  I would send them back and ask for an exchange.

I ruled out that the Eotech could be the problem.  I mounted the Eotech to the upper alone, not touching the Troy, and it wasn't canted anymore.

No koolaid here.  I had it narrowed down to MI and Troy.  Given that there was only a $20 or so difference, people recommended I just pick whichever looks better to me.  Which was the Troy.

looks like yer barrel nut needs an adjustment.

i guess it could be the rail, but i doubt it.

How does one go about adjusting a barrel nut?

<----hopes it doesn't involve special tools

definitly looks like the barrel nut needs to be tightened a hair.

OK, so I checked the "Build It Yourself" section, and I'm guessing a need an armorer's wrench, correct?

How do I go about actually checking to see if it's loose, before I go ordering tools?

It might not be loose but it still needs to be tighter. You need an action block as well, I like the DPMS panther claw. You may also have to remove the gas tube so you can get the wrench on the barrel nut.

An armorers tool is a very important thing to have around. Very useful/versatile. You can get em from bushmaster/dpms/pretty much everyone.

I sure hope its just loose, and there is no problem with the rail. I plan on buying the same one for current build.

Good luck and keep us updated!

Nope.  Troy makes a great product and YHM isn't up to par.  I've handled quite a bit of the Troy product line and chances are it's the barrel nut and not the rail that is off.

yes , you'll need to remove the gas tube. the nut can go a tich tighter, or if still inside the torque range, a notch looser, whatever gives you the best results.  35 - 80 ftlbs gives a fairly good amount of room to get it all lined up.

armorers wrench & upper vice blocks are good investments anyway. good chance you'll find them in the EE.

hope you get her all worked out.

OK, thanks to everyone for the replies.

It's probably gonna be awhile before I get to buy anything else.  Money is kinda tight at the moment.

So I have one more question: What are the consequences of not tightening the barrel nut right away?  Should I not shoot, 'til I get it tightened down?  I can deal with the fact that's my rail is off center, for the time being, until I get the tools.  But I just need to know if my barrel is gonna come flying off until then.

Funny that you mention this, as I just dealt with something similar today.  Just traded for a RRA upper assembly here on the EE.  Came in the mail and decided that the YHM flash suppressor needed to go (UGLY!).  Used my DPMS armorer tool, took it off and noticed a distinct wobble between the upper receiver and the YHM FF quad rail.

Messed with it no more, called my riflesmith.  Loose barrel nut.  He hooked it up, torqued it to 35 ft pounds and that sucker don't move anymore.  Scary that it might have been shot that way.  May be okay, but screw that...get it tightened first.

I've been told of NEW rifles showing up with loose barrels...that visibly wobble when pulled on.  Just like GM, their assembly lines have Mondays and Fridays, too.

The number and value of the tools my guy used to fix this isn't worth the time or trouble.  Have someone that knows ARs fix it.

Quite frankly, I don't see the cant in the first picture, but if that rail MOVES at all, get that barrel tightened up!

My .02.

The rail doesn't move at all.  It locks up TIGHT.
