I purchased an Armalite mutt from a guy and am having trouble identifying whether it is chambered SAAMI, or NATO.  Only barrrel markings I can find are between flash supressor and front sight post.  Is a M-4 profile barrel marked "Double Diamond 1-9"

Does anyone know who manufactured this barrel, or have any details on it?

Thanks a bunch!

The newer Armalite barrels have a light "N" stamped on the outside rear end of the barrel if it had 5.56 chamber. Armalite originally used 223 chambers, and eventually announced the switch to 5.56 chambering, but it took a bit longer for them to get "around tuit".

would this mark be visible by removing the handguards?  Or is it under the delta ring and nut?  Hoping I don't need to dismount the barrel to find it.  BTW...  don't know if it is an armalite barrel.  But am sure the lower is armalite...  hence the term mutt.

TIA,
mike

Most barrel manufactures "stamp" the information on the barrel and it is this information that'll determine the chamber your parts is part rifle has.

Go to www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=223495 and review the "Barrel Markings" section for commonly stamped barrels then check you barrel.

Determine the maker of the barrel and you'll have the answer to your chamber question by reviewing the tacked thread atop the AR Discussion forum (AR Comparision Chart).

Take off the handguards and look at the barrel beneath the delta ring.

I've posted some question for ArmaLite in the industry section...
One of those questions was: "how are Armalite's barrels marked (caliber, barrel twist, etc)?"

their answer was: "N = Nato, C = Chrome, 3 = Vendor code, Date (when manufactured)"

Un-necessary "IF" it is not an Armalite bbl as the barrel markings are normally in front of the FSB.

this is the only stamping I can find on this M-4 profile barrel...  dunno.  so 1 in 9 says light weight or .223 rem. to me...  at least until I know betterhinking.gif don't want any surprises

Well you have your answer then......., you have a true "parts is parts" rifle there as that is a "Doublestar" 1/9 twist barrel there (aka J&T) and as I cannot find the AR Comparison Chart 'cus the link is broken that does not preclude you from picking up the phone, calling Doublestar and getting them to tell you "how" Doublestar barrels are chambered....

mike

eta - here's a link to J&T (same as Doublestar):

Doublestar/J&T

as ya probably have a J&T/Doublestar upper mounted on a Armalite lower - call them and they can tell ya about the chamber - IIRC J&T barrels have mil-spec 5.56 chambers but that was years ago when I researched them and I don't trust my recollection.....

LOL..  nohatBut ya know the funny part is the folks at star (aka JT Dist.) claim it isn't theirs...
My buddy in Texas is mailing a receiver block and wrench up and I will dismount it this weekend.  Prolly mail it back with Tommy's tools and just replace it with a known quantity barrel.  But it sure looks like the JT Dist. DS-4 upper to me.

I just wanna say thanks for your help guys...  apparently I needed some help with my case of cranial-rectosis.
