So who makes a better upper?

Talking about barrel quality and materials, testing of parts, and quality of bolts...

Which one is closest to milspec?

I have M-4 uppers from both Armalite and Bushmaster. I have been very happy with both uppers, but there are a few differences between them. The Armalite has an M-4 barrel extension, M-4 feed ramps, an enhanced bolt carrier group with a shrouded firing pin, black extractor insert and a Crane O-ring from the factory. My Bushy upper has none of these, but they are available in a 1 in 7 twist barrel, whereas it is not an option on the Armalite. Both companies do batch MPI testing of their bolts and both claim to use 4150 barrel steel. Again, I have been happy with both setups, but if I had to choose between the two, I would take the Armalite.

According to Armalite they do use 4150 steel. If you are interested in the Bushy 1 in 7 twist barrels, you might try contacting PK Firearms to see if they have any left in stock.

No.
Armalite uses 4140 steel.
They will switch to CMV steel once they use up current 4140 stock.

Interesting - when I contacted Armalite, i was advised that all of the M-4 barrels were made from 4150 steel. Who knows for sure?

Having had both brands I prefer the Armalite. I like the profile on the Armalite barrels.

They more or less use the same vendors for barrels, bolts etc.  So regardles of profile and length your Bushmaster barrel is probably coming off the same machine as the Armalite.   Both are ordering production barrels in crates of 100. So one guys BM is going to be better then another guys Armalite and vise-versa depending on the luck of the draw.  Both have good service depatments that want to make you happy on the outside chance you get a lemon.

Apparently not all Armalite personnel knows what steel their company uses.
In Industry Forum, Armalite specifically stated that their barrels are 4140.
I called and e-mailed them and got correct information.

When I purchased Armalite rifle, I believed that barrel was chrome-moly-vanadium.
The information they provide on their site is too ambiguous, rather misleading as to the type of steel they use.

The Best Barrel Selection on the Market:
ArmaLite offers barrels made of stainless steel, 4140 chrome moly, or Mil spec chrome lined. Our chrome lined Mil Spec barrels are made of tough chrome-moly-vanadium barrel steel and are rifled at 1 turn in 9 inches ... far superior to the 1 turn in 7 inch twist government barrel.

Do not figure that you'll get that Mil spec chrome lined CMV barrel. You'll get chrome lined 4140.

Here's a copy of e-mail reply from Armalite staff:

Richard,

Our current barrels are chrome lined 4140 and in the future we are looking at supplying our full and semi auto with chrome lined vanadium.

Thanks for the heads up - that was not what I was told by the rep I spoke with about two months ago.
