Debating what to use on my first build, a barrel kit from JP in light contour or piecing together a Noveske Recon, comp, and tube.  How do the barrels compare? I know alot like Noveske but thought I'd explore my options.  Also, what is the best method to have a stainless barrel blackened and where?

Thanks

If you are building for 3-gun or varmit shooting, I would go with the JP. If you are building to shoot alot and take tactical classes, I would go Noveske. I know alot of guys shooting JP,s (myself included) and the only thing you have to worry about is the quality of the ammo and the shooter. It will not be the barrels fault.

I got the RECON,

while both are good and probably the same in accuracy, the noveske was made to be accurate AND run full auto.to me that means it is the better barrel.john told me of doing mag dumps using MK262m0 in testing.while I am sure at some point it would screw up the barrel doing that at least it was made with durability and accuracy in mind.

I don't know, but I doubt the JP was made to run that hard.

bigbore says a stainless barrel is a stainless barrel.maybe.when I looked for a good one (in my opinion) I looked a lot and got a RECON in 8P.I believe I made the right choice.

I am going to get a JP kit myself. running full auto does not make a better barrel. a barrel to be run full auto is not going to be as accurate. while it may be able to do MOA or just under, the JP will do WELL under MOA.

if the OP is looking for the most accurate of the 2 options, go with the JP. While alot of people are happy with 3/4 to 1 MOA, I want 1/2 or less MOA. Considering I can also get the Comp and adjustable gas block with the kit (and have a nicely polished barrel)..........

Don't get me wrong, the Noveske barrels are great, but not want I want for this build......maybe another build........

What kind of accuracy can be expected from a Noveske 18" SPR barrel with polygonal rifling?  Are we talking 1/2 moa?

This is what I wanted to hear.  I'm working on funds to get one this year.  1/2 moa with 5-shot group.....NICE!!!!

and when trying I get 1/2 @ 100 yds using 75grn OTM, with the 16.1 8P 10 shots.
and I only brought up auto fire to bring a point of durability up.I understand the accuracy part and how it is a way to a "better" barrel. I figured if it was made to do both then how could it be inferior.

Thanks for the responses, looks like this ones going to just be a preference in the end!  I like the idea of getting the JP as a kit, with their comp (which happens to be the one I would put on any barrel) already attached, and since it will mostly be varmint/fun gun the durability differnce (if any at all) isnt a concern.

I still was wondering though if anyone has suggestions for the best way to blacken stainless and who does that.  I wouldnt mind shipping it out if its a specialty thing.

Thanks again!

Not sure about who blackens barrels, but you can get an 18" PRI 5.56 SPR stainless steel barrel that already has a non-reflective black coating at www.pkfirearms.com.

If I decide to not keep it nice and shiny, I am going to use Duracoat.
