No real way to tell if there are no other markings. LMT, Mega, and RRA mark theirs. No one else really does. Colt, and FN would have a C or an F forge mark in addition to the contract forge house. If the seller doesn't know, then you probably won't be able to find out for sure. If you picked it up form one of the "guy's at a gunshow" it is definitely anyones guess. But I think every "gunshow upper" is made by FN, 'cause that is what just about every gunshow vendor says so it must be true. Just like the carney at the fair insisting that you will win at his booth. In the end though, as long as the parts fit correctly and the finish is decent, it really doesn't matter. |

Roger that - Thanks, I did find an "M" stamped just over the gas tube hole but no other markings. My rail numbers are black and not painted white if that matters. Otherwise, no other markings. I did read in another thread that if your upper bears a forging mark that it is more than likely not a peice of cheese. Is this true? |
Not completely true. The final machining to spec and finishing is where the line is drawn between a good receiver and a piece of junk. |
The "M" he is talking about would be on the front vertical surface of the receiver above the hole that the gas tube goes through to mate with the gas key of the BCG. This would also be aft of the deltaring assembly so it would not be found under the handguards. You can't necessarily I.D. an upper based on the markings on a barrel, with so many builders and garage gunsmiths out there now, "franken guns" are more common. |
You are exactly right about the "M" letter stamp and its placement. My numbers on my upper are not colored. They are black. Other than this "M" stamp and the Cardinal Forge logo, I know squat about my upper receiver. As I replaced my Bushy upper, with this flat top upper, I can't look at the barrel to determine the maker of the upper. I have a Bushy HBAR and a LaRue free floating rail. The upper receiver itself is the only part that I have that I can't fully identify. All I know is that it has M4 feed ramps. Thanks for the responses! |
