I'm looking to build an accurate rifle. How good are the Wilson barrels from Rock River Arms, and is there likely to be any great accuracy difference between the heavy stainless and the varmint? Also, how much accuracy at longer distances will I give up by going with the 18" instead of the 20" because of the lower velocity? When I'm looking at barrels, I notice that a number of makes say the barrels are "air gauged" - what does that mean? Thanks in advance for any help. |
| The RRA Wilson barrels are top notch. Either one will be accurate; the heavier contours allow more shots before it gets hot is all. I like 20's but an 18 will be fine. Air gauging is a means of precision measuring a bore to insure consistent diameter throughout the bore. If you don't know what there standard is for their premium barrel it is just a marketing gimmick. Some barrel makers air gauage all of there barrels but their spec is .001" which isn't much of a barrel. Other's say .0003" is their reqiuirement for a premium barrel. |

wilson are good, shilen, lilja and kriger are a step up. the price doubles that being said if you shoot alot 2-3k rounds per year your wilson will be done in 2-3 yrs but the krieger has proven itself to be a 10k+ barrel. what type of shooting will you do wilson will shoot sub moa, the others mentioned are 1/2 moa and less if you do your part. bench shooting to work up a load is nice but it isnt hunting.. at 300 yards the best ar (les baer my .02) with a 15 mph wind will drift several inches. if you cant read the wind what good is owning this gun??? it goes back to the shooter at the end of the day. |
