What is so special about this brand that they command Colt-esque prices for their uppers?

Their midlengths blow everyone else away IMO.
I know, I know, I say that in every SDI or Middie thread.
But it is true.

The barrels are EXCELLENT.  They're complete uppers blow anything else I've ever seen away.  Everything is quality and finished in an excellent matter.  No problems in 3 different uppers I've been in extended contacted with.

Saginaw79,

I've always been a die hard Colt fan and still am, that said, I aquired a full size standard Sabre 20" A2 Gov't 1/7 w/2 stage trigger and this rifle is now my favorite out of my 6 AR's (obviously including my Colts)...SDI is top notch - definitely a Tier 1 AR manufacturer.

my $0.02

Cheers,

Saginaw,

I agree.  I don't care how good the barrels are.  I'd much rather put down some serious money toward a POF or LWRC rifle...or upper, for that matter.

The Massad Ayoob signature model, (yes, it's been in every mag for the past six months, seems like), is a prime example.  To each his own I guess.

I think some of their complete rifles are overpriced, especially their Ayoob model.

They are the only company outside of Colt/FN to make a full GI spec barrel in a govt qualified facility.

If SDI gets scottryan's approval, then it's good-to-go.

I've had a 20" government profile upper from Sabre for a while now, and love it.  Fit and finish is excellent.

They do some things I don't care for however.  I don't like the fact that they put M4 feedramps on their M16A4 style barrel.

I also wish they would offer a 1/7 14.5" lightweight profile barrel.

Sabre uses CMV barrel steels.  Their barrels have more quality control than most.  The ones I own have lot numbers stamped on them.  From a manufacturing standpoint, there is no reason to do this unless you are dedicated to quality control and batch tracking.  I've heard that all their barrels are MPI and HPT tested.  Which I don't doubt.  I think they are an ISO 9000 company, which means they have to meet certain quality control guidelines to obtain that certification.  Most of their other small parts are also as good as any other I've seen.

I've been very impressed with my sabre parts and guns.

Off topic but I use their stripped lowers exclusivly for my build. very high quality and I love the way they are marked nice simple small markings.

My A1 14.5" govt profile upper from sabre is very nice and well built. Also very accurate. unfortunately I will be selling it to build a new SBR but I would get another sabre in a heart beat

I shoot a SDI XR15 and was putting very nice groups down range back when it was a bone stock rifle and a 150$ scope.

What it comes down to is that they make absolutely some of the best barrels in the industry and they are worth every penny.

Although Im not a Colt Kool-aid drinker, I will freely admit over the years the Colts I have owned have been consistant in their accuracy.  Colt barrels are damn good, better than most.

The Sabre midlength 1/7 Govt profile barrel I have performs the same way. 100% reliability and scary accuracy.

I know several other that have similar experiences with their Sabre barrels/uppers.

ScottRyan, I was wondering if you could further expand on this?

"I don't like the fact that they put M4 feedramps on their M16A4 style barrel."

I'm sure you have a good reason for saying this.

It is deviation away from normal.  Rifles are not suppose to have extended feedramps.

Not trying to stir the pot , but other than being "not normal", is it a bad thing in any way?

I just don't like having rifle barrels with carbine ramps.  A2 and A1 uppers are not readily avaliable with carbine ramps for someone building a 20".

I believe CMMG is working to remedy that.

I think I can build uppers with Kriegers cut rifled super match barrels cheaper and there is no way a chromelined barrel will shoot with a Krieger.
