I would like to hear first hand experience of running a 18" at 800m. I am looking for a platform that is predominately used at 600m line but it must be able to stay inside 2MOA out to its maximum envelop at 800m. I know the velocity numbers, I just want to hear from those who have done it. Xgwwea |

Wind read and mirage are the biggest killers past 600. You think everything is cake until the mirage goes boogie dancin' and you start seeing the target a foot from where it really is. Or when the wind is hitting you on your right cheek and the flag on the berm is going the other way. The sirens start singing and you start chanting, "first wind is the worst wind, first wind is the worst wind..." On dead calm days with no mirage I'm a freakin' ballistic genius. On the other 364 days of the year, well, not so much. |
Check in the reloading forum, there are a few good loads for home made MK262. I have a kick ass pet load with Winchester brass and Varget, while others like LC brass with Reloader 15. Each barrel is different, so you'll have to fine tune on your own |
2800 is very optimistic even with real MK262. |
Though my 18" Kreiger SPR barrel with the OPS 12th mounted, the most we saw (as figured by the guy with the chronograph) was 2769 fps/muzzle with the Fulton Armory non molly MK262. He said to use 2750 fps/muzzle for ballistic calculations. |
That's not going to be supersonic at 800. The Hornady 75 grain HPBT will stay supersonic at 800 when launched at 2700 fps and would be a better choice than the 77 Nosler or Sierra. |
what difference does it make if its not supersonic? The higher BC of the heavier/longer bullet is whats important. ETA - looks like the 75 has a higher BC too. |
I've scored when .308 168gr bullets from M1As went subsonic and tumbled into the 10 ring at 1Kyds. My 80s arent supersonic but still hold the X ring at 1K. |
Why take that chance and just choose a bullet and load combo that will stay supersonic. It is well known that bullets yaw when they go subsonic and accuracy suffers. |
If there is ANY concern, your bullets are going subsonic before they hit the target, you brought the wrong tool for the job. Accuracy of course suffers, but there is some magin or error you can get away with. Push those 168s another 50yds, and I doubt they would hit the board, let alone the 10 ring. |
Couldn't be more than 250 yards. Everyone knows that past the fragmentation range 5.56 bullets just bounce off the target, causing minor wounds that inspire the enemy to great feats of heroics.
|
Yes, but the wound could get infected and lead to a slow painful death. |
I think you contradicted yourself. |

Im sorry if this question takes this tread off on a tangent, but I have not really seen this information anywhere else. What qualities of an AR make it a SPR: Barrel length, twist, composition, optics etc? I have seen a few WOA barrels that are specifically marketed as being SPR and they are in the 18 or 20" range. Thanks in advance. |
Look here, from MSTN, for the story behind the SPR And look here, from ADCO, on how they're made. Short version: The basic weapon is a 18" match barrel with the Ops Inc suppressor, KAC FF tube, Leupold scope and a KAC 2 stage trigger. And use the uber sweet Mk262 ammo. They are really impressive weapons. |
