What is the advantages on going a 18"SPR type barrel at midlenth vs. carbine gas system.?

I think the only way it really comes into play is when you are shooting weak ammo. For example... oh say... rad green. You may get short stroking in a rifle length gas system where it may shoot fine in a middy gas system.
