What is the point of having a rail system if all you are gonna put on it are rail covers?

I think the majority of people here only put rail covers on the sections of rail they arent using. The rails are used for mounting vfg,lights,peq,optics, etc

A Free Float setup with the ability to add goodies if you want? I only say that because I plan on being that goofball guy that has a rail system with nothing but covers...

I know I don't really need it but again do I really truely need my AR (I have a 12 gauge for home defense). And for that matter I don't really need my Remy 700 that is capable of reaching out to 900 meters

Some free floats can be a pain to install because you have to remove the FSB to do it. I would guess that people have the rails installed knowing that they will eventually mount accessories to them.

Rails allow you to mount what you need, when you need it, and then take it off. When you take off something you don't need, some like to put rail covers on them.

Otherwise, we'd all look like this guy:

People with large hands (like myself) prefer the wider grip and the accessibility of adding accessories if needed/wanted.

Most free float railed handguards allow both free floating and ventilation that a lot of the non-railed free floats do not.

The purpose of covers is to protect the soft aluminum rails from getting damaged. Rails are for mission specific gear that you may not always need to have on your rail.. (e.g. White or IR lights. laser designators. GL sights,Grenade launchers, Vertical grips,sling adapters,etc)

That's why there are so many types of QD mounts. Leave the covers off.. Damage the soft aluminum rail and then the next time you go to mount your gear... it does not fit.

Covers also help with Heat so you don't burn your self touching exposed rail after rapid fire.

Don't need any mission specific gear on your rail.??? No sweat.. stick with the stock hand-guards and sleep easy...
