Ok, I am in the process of ordering some parts to build *my* version of an SPR and was wondering if a 10" rail system will cover the gas block on a mid length barrel or if the gas block will be exposed. My reasoning is I want either a rail system that covers the gas block entirely thats not over 10" or one where I can use the YHM folding sight/gas block combo, not real happy with any of the stand alone low profile gas blocks and would rather not have to look at it if possible

I believe a rifle length rail system is required to completely cover the gas block on a mid-length gas system.  The mid length I have is 9" long and does not touch the gas block.  The gas block, being about 2" long would require it to be more than 11" in length.

I understand the words you used but do not understand the thinking behind not wanting a low profile gas block.  There are several to chose from.

First off, thanks for the measurements, they helped me narrow down what I'm going to do now.

I don't really like the exposed, stand alone gas block look so I figured that if a 10" Troy MRF wouldn't cover the gas block I'd have 2 choices, either use the YHM folding front sight/gas block combo or get the MRF in 12" and use the shorty YHM rail mounted folding front sight and hide the gas block underneath the rail.

I'd get the rifle length (12") MRP and mount a front sight on the top rail.  It looks really clean when you're done.

I'm 99% sure thats what I'm going to end up doing. I have seen a few SPR versions setup that way, looks very clean and well built and thats what I'm looking for, a tack driver built to suit my needs/wants and looks clean and well built.
