Hi all!  I am looking into getting a Stag 6.8 left.  It comes in the carbine length.  Can a mid-length rail fit onto this platform?  How does this affect the gas block position?  Stag will install a Samson rail for me but all they have in stock is the carbine length.  I love some of the LaRue rails and wondered how they would fit.  I may or may not get the standard front sight.  An option would be to get a flip-up sight as well.  Any input would be appreciated.

If it has a normal front sight then you'd be trying to fit 9" of handguard into a 7" space.  Either the gas block needs to be small enough to fit under the handguards or the top of handguard needs to be cut back to allow room for the sight.  Low profile gas blocks and handguards that 'wrap around' the front sight base are both available from several manufacturers.

How -could- it affect gas block position?  You understand that the gas block is positioned over a gas port that has been drilled into the barrel, right?

I do understand the gas block is drilled.  Just was not sure if its always in the same spot and then you guys put on your handguards accordingly.  Thanks for the help in clarifying all this for me.

It's not that the gas block is drilled, it's that there is a hole drilled in teh barrel so that high pressure gas can pass through the gas block and gas tube.  The gas block doesn't always have to be in the same spot, but if it isn't aligned with that hole in teh barrel then you'll have a bolt action rifle wiht a hole that will allow hot gases to burn the shit out of your support hand.

Sorry, meant to say barrel is drilled.  But yes I understand the concept more fully now.  Thanks all!

Did you look at these two options from Samson for your Stag upper?

MRFS-CX-EBR AR-15 Modular Rail Forend System - 10” Extended Rail - $310.00

MRFS-CX AR-15 Modular Rail Forend System - 10” Extended Rail - $299.00

RedFalcon,  I have been looking at the $310.00 Samson option for some time now also.  But it says "requires some FSB work".  Just wondering if it means removing the sling attachments?  Do you have any idea?  I currently have a Samson on my Stag lefty 5.56.

Daryn,

The short answer is, yes it does require you to remove the sling swivel from the bottom of the FSB.  You also lose the ability to use the bayonet lug.  Whether or not this is important to you, I do not know.

If you want to use both of these items, then consider the MRFS-CX model instead.

The MRFS-CX-EBR also covers up more of the barrel to prevent the user from getting burned.  This happened to me every now and then with the M-4 I was issued back in the 82nd.

However, I also have a 37" sleeve length, so YMMV.

Thanks Bill,  I don't plan on using the baynet lug.  I appreciate responses that the rest of you gave.  You helped me greatly.

Sounds like you need a Daniel Defense 9.5" FSP or 12.0 FSP.
Let the front sight stay where it is and then wrap the rails around it...
