I am wondering if I made a mistake. How much longer will a chrome lined barrel last over a standard SS barrel?? I just ordered a RRA mid length with the Wilson SS with the Wylde chamber. I wanted the tigher chamber as I wanted to use it for a target rifle and for long range plinking. How much of an advantage is the chrome lining? The chromed barrels don't have the tighter "match" chamber. How much better are chrome lined barrels for a guy who will be doing alot of plinking as opposed to full auto mag dumps? What should I do to care for the SS barrel that I wouldn't have to do to the chrome lined versions? |
| Clean it after every trip, even if you happen to only fire one shot because you got all the way out to your ranch without your tools only to find that the second, would be, shot jammed due to the fact that the neck had been crushed ever-so-slightly, causing the bullet to be canted and the force of being fed into you AR's chamber bent it further wedging it in the chamber (thank God it didn't slamfire or something)... Then you will think to yourself..."Now I know why this particular lot of M193 became XM193, but i'm still wondering why this one round didn't make the XM193PD pile." anyhow, i digress... Clean it like you mean it and you'll be fine. |
I hate to break it to you, but some grades of stainless steel WILL rust. Some are more stainless than others. |
Where in my first post did I say that it was rustproof? I said that it resist rust very well. I give it a light coat of oil and that's it. I'm not in a humid environment, so rust is less of an issue with me, although I've learned the hard way that you should wipe down and oil your weapons, as I've had rust develop and pit a chrome-moly barrel (non chrome-lined). I've also seen what really bad pitting looks like (WWII era Enfield that was not properly cleaned after firing corrosive ammo.) EDIT: What kind of steel does RRA use in thier varmint barrels, anyway? |
Uh, I was referring to the quy who quoted your post, put the "resists rust" bit in red, and then added this: ![]() Apparently HE doesn't realize that some stainless is more stainless than others. |

I am new to the AR, but I am under the assumption that I am more worried about copper fouling that regular fouling. I read about the coppper that is temporarily vaporized and gets deposited on the inside of the barrel. I have some JB's bore paste as well as some hoppes copper solvent. |
