here is where this thread is headed: archive.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=267169 also see archive.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=274341 ar-jedi ps: if it was my money, and it was in a Les Baer-sized pile, i'd be talking with Denny (GTS), Wes (MSTN), Steve (ADCO), Jason (JTAC), John (Noveske), or one of the many other builders of fine AR's found here on ar15.com's forums. your dollars will go further and you can spend the difference on training and ammo. |
team members get to see all of the posts on the archive server. you are probably better off not reading that thread. so i have to ask, what do you plan to do with this rifle that you are contemplating buying? or, have you already purchased it? ar-jedi |

AR-Jedi has a point. Everyone he mentioned actually gives a shit about AR15.com and therefore when we see people that care about us, we care about them. Having said that, nobody can dispute the impeccable quality of Les Baer builds. The parts lists reads like a Top Shelf race gun shopping cart. Not to mention even the "basic" components are top quality not junk. It's your money, it's your personal desire (the Varmit direction) so have at it ace! Personally I'd build some form of SDM-R/SAM-R clone. It'll be perfect for Varmits, Tacticool applications, and not many people around here have one. $0.02 |
agreed; the thing is, value has to enter the equation somewhere. say i buy a BMW for twice the price of a rental fleet car -- i get a vehicle that is somewhat faster, brakes better, is quieter inside, has increased safety systems (door air bags etc), increased comfort (seat heat, etc), and i can expect that it may last 1.5 times as long and have greater resale value. so yes, a BMW is a pile of coin but you are getting some very tangible differences to go along with the cachet of slinging a BMW key around while you are talking to the ladies at the gym. that said, it's not clear to me that you are getting ANY additional, measureable performance from a relatively expensive rifle with the LB name on the side -- and therein lies the value rub. i can get a Noveske or Krieger or Lilja or Douglas or ${your_favorite} barrel, put it on a straight upper and mount a decent trigger underneath, and there is no doubt that i can reliably match holes center-to-center with the LB gun. to the OP, in the end you do as you please with your money. don't let anyone here prevent you from realizing your dreams. ar-jedi |

I have seen my friends Les Baer Varmit shoot 20 rds. into a quarter at 200 yds off the top of my truck. It never fails and is very accurate. I believe that I would buy one if I didn't want to try to put something together that will shoot that good. I have no doubt that others can pull it off, but I would not want to try and get that kind of quality in my own build. He does a heck of a lot of work to get that kind of performance. |
Blah! You've never read my signature! Back on topic. AR-Jedi I love the BMW direction you took. At the range though, wouldn't the average good old boy (aka a Fudd) get wet when he saw the LBC on the bench? Nothing sayz "I'm the shit" like a CHROME bolt carrier. Just wish I had $200 bucks for the GTS custom version. If I was independently wealthy I would buy Les Baer but only for their .204 variant. Nobody else has one and that would be my only reason. |

I used to love the idea of owning a LB. Times have changed, with all the billet uppers and lowers coming out, Les Baer needs to revamp his lineup if he expects to demand those kind of prices. Go over and spend some time on one of MSTN's picture threads. It'll give you an idea just how awesome of an AR you could build for $2400 |

i own a les baer 24 super varmint w/8.5-25 leup it is their 1:12 twist - their combo package. yesterday i was out shooting and with ammo 52 gr hpbt from a company called T's out of texas (they sell new ammo made on a dillon commercial loader) (you can find they on gunbroker selling ammo) i shot several 7 round groups (our range permits only a max of 7 rounds in any magazine) and my worse group was the size of a nickel, my best group i had all 7 rounds in one ragged hole that was the size of the back side of 223 brass. the gun is remarkable with respect to accuracy- cold, rapid fire hot barrel it does not matter. again i am not using custom reloads that are taylored to the gun. the down side to the gun is the cheap and i mean cheap plastic stock and handle. my handle was replaced with an spr (not sure this is my cup of tea probably will go to a ambi ergo. so bottom line for 20-30 bucks after you toss the grip in the can you get a semi that will EASLY embarrass the hell out of custom bull barrel bolt guns. for shits and giggles a fellow shooter hung a baseball at 300 yards. he was shooting a remington 700 in 308, his gun had a jewel trigger (as does les baers) and his had an aftermarket lilja (one of the best makers period) he fired first and hit a total of 8/10 shots.... i killed out 10 shots 10 hits... by the time we were done only the skin of the ball was left.... bottom line there are many makers of ar15's i dont doubt that you can take a rock river or superbull dpms and with reloads shoot very tight groups (last week a fellow member posted 680 yard shots done on video hittinga 7x 11 inch target...a moa gun no doubt..... but bang for the buck for a turnkey gun that is nothing short of amazing my vote is the les baer super varmint. |
