I am familiar with the teardrop and the round forward assists.  I recently saw another type of round forward assist that I am unfamiliar with.  This one was round but had a much larger diameter head on it.  I can't really describe it more thatn to say it was flat on the receiver side and overlapped about an 1/16 of an inch more around the edges than the standard round one.  If I get a chance I will post a picture.

Is any else familiar with this type?

Actually, the very last M16A1s had the bigger round piece

When the A2, with it's thicker rear ring, came out, Colt had to start milling a flat clearance cut into the inside of the big round piece, to clear the rear of the lower. That's when the current small round piece was designed.

Yep, that is what it looks like.  Sorry I didn't get around to posting pictures myself.  This is on an A2 upper I picked up but it isn't Colt.  It is an LK marked upper which I believe is a spare parts contract upper.
