I'm looking for some advice- I've got a DPMS 16" stainless bull barrel, which is accurate as all get out, but in low light conditions, such as dawn and dusk, the muzzle flash all but blinds me.  I use the rifle for coyote hunting, and am finally getting fed up with it.  I'm wondering if anyone makes a flash hider for this style barrel, or if I should just get a different upper.  Anybody have an idea?

Get it threaded.

Add Vortex.

Thats the only way to go.

Thanks for the reply.  Threading was an option I had in mind, just didn't know if anyone would consider turning down that diameter barrel.  Any suggestions on who does quality work?

Several on this board.  Randall at www.AR15barrels.com has worked on several of my barrels (and built from scratch another one).

ADCO can also do the threading. Very fast turn around.

i say add a phantom....
IIRC it outperforms the vortex in flash suppression

Nope, other way around.  The only thing that beats a Vortex is a Supressor.

ok, well in that case, im still going to say Phantom....because you can get a closed bottom model...to keep from kicking up dust when out coyote'ing

and the test pics i have seen show the phantom being at least comparable to the vortex.

wont the VORTEX KICK UP DUST while he is shooting poor little dogs

Sure, but so will the Phantom.  The only difference is in the amount of the dust and how close to the muzzle.

I have seen side by side comparisons of the Vortex and the Phantom. The Phantom doesn't even come close to reducing flash the way the Vortex does. The Vortex damn near eliminates the flash. After seeing it first hand I was completely sold on the Vortex. The worst flash hider is on the AUG by the way. That thing sucks. But I digress.

I really don't think he is going to have to worry about the coyotes returning fire at a dust signature he leaves, especially in low light when you can't really see it anyway. The Phantom doesn't reduce the dust signature much better IIRC.

My last upper I bought, had a Vortex on it, and I had one put on my neighbor's brothers upper because of flash problems(he LOVES it), and I will be putting one on my 16" AR here next month. They just plain work. The Phantom does reduce muzzle flash, but the Vortex is in a whole different catagory.

I have never shot my m4 with a vortex, but with a phantom there are still some visible flash coming out of the sides of the FH during low light parts of the afternoon.

Thanks for all the info guys.  I think I'll go with the vortex, sounds like that's the ticket.  Does anyone have a link for ADCO?

I am not a Vortex hater . I had one and it did the job that it is intended to do. But, while I was out in the woods, walking around and plinking with a M4orgery that I had at that time, I took a little tumble when stepping over a downed tree. The muzzle of my weapon took a pretty good whack, and to my horror, one of the prongs of the Vortex was bent in. It was bent enough, that had I shot it in its condition, the bullet would have impacted with the bent prong and that cant be good. YMMV But the phantom seems, to me, a more robust FH. Works pretty good as an impact device as well.

ive shot my phantom hundreds of rounds in the pitch of night whilst hunting rabbits...never once noticed a flash.

but then again, i wasnt looking for one either.
