I'm two weeks away from ordering my newest upper. I've decided to go with a middy gas system and a 16" barrel. Now the next step is the chrome-lined vs. no chrome-lined barrel controversy. I know that chrome-lined barrels provide better wear and corrsion resistance, but do they do anything for accuracy? In general, is it worth the extra $50 for chrome-lining? Thanks, Gary |

For a 16" carbean I'd go Chrome mainly because it's more durable. With handloads and a scope I've been able to shoot 5-shot groups of 1" or less from several chrome lined barrels, so you won't lose much accuracy by going chrome. A 1" group is MUCH better than I can do standing up, so I'm the limiting factor there and not the barrel. Finding the ammo YOUR gun prefers will be far more important. Try some different types and different brands, your gun may have a preference. My AR seems to shoot tighter with Federal XM193 than with Winchester Q3131. But your AR may have different preferences. If you shoot shoot the really cheap stuff don't expect the best results. |
