Does this surfire rail system M73 go on like regular handguards?

Yes it does.

I don't own one, but it seems you either love them or hate them. I have heard they fit well but the top rail does not line up with the rail on the upper receiver.

Goes on like regular handguards, but with two set screws so they dont wobble once properly installed.

I'm very happy with mine.  Been runningb an upper with them for over two years and over 3,000 rounds and they have not shot loose.

They are underated by some, mostly because they are inexpensive and not very gucci.

But the work well and have an excellent reputation with peole who really use their carbines.

You heard correctly.  They are great for what they are supposed to be.

Yep.  A method of attaching a verticle foregrip and a weapon light.  not an optics platform.

+1, but for doing those things they are rock solid and outstanding, IMO.  I love my Surefire M73's and one thing I like about the M73 is its relatively small diameter (which is an attribute hated by others).  Depends on what you need it for.

I also love it and one of the reasons is the smaller diameter.  I never understand why people make a big deal out of the top rail not lining up.  Almost no one mounts an optic on the handguards.  If you are going to mount something on the top rail it would be something like an OTAL which having a lower rail is a plus so the laser would sit lower and out of the view of your optic.

In my opinion it's hard to beat the M73 especially for the price.

FWIW i like my M73 enough i just got the rifle length M82 for my Colt Sporter Competition HBAR.

Looks damn good with an A1 stock, TA01 ACOG, sierra precision grip, PRI big latch and Surefire M82 railed forend.

There is a thread here someplace that indicates that the SureFire won't work with an Eotech mounted directly on the flat-top. If you want an Eotech, you might search for that thread.

I have used both an N-Cell and AA eotech mounted directly to the flat top on a M73 equipped upper.

Actually the lower handguard of the M73 is retained by the delta ring. I just installed a rifle lenght set tonight.

Not owning one I don't know. But here is the thread over in optics.

it should work just fine, I had an A2 upper so I mounted my Aimpoint on the handguards (M73) and it worked and with and EOTech having a bigger FOV it should work pretty good.

QUESTION

I have a LMT M4 with a 551 eotech mounted as is ( sits a  Tad bit over the Delta ring)

Why wont the Eotech and M73 work together?

Also Im wanting the M73 for a Light and maybe a pistol grip ONLY

Also My  other LMT M4 use a Larue cantilever and a ML2
so I could always use this M4

I did check the other thread?

I dont think there will be a problem for me
I dont want my 551 mounted over the handguard rail anyway

+1 That's what I tried to tell them in that thread - put the Eotech back on the upper (I have a 552 AA) and there is still plenty of room for a BUIS.  No need to overhang the handguard IMO, so you will be set if you like that way of setting it up as well.  The M73 is a good solid platform for a VFG or light, and is light weight and smaller in diameter than many rails which is what I like about it.  You will like it too I think.

If this is about where you mount your 551 you should be good. I can move my 512 back more but it will hit the top of my rail past this point.

That is exactly where mine sits, pretty much ending where the delta ring ends.  Works just fine.

Right, it works fine in that position.  I wanted my EOTech farther out over the M73 to allow more room for my fixed Larue BUIS.  I don't think the others in the thread I started realized that I want to hang over the M73 not but up against it.  It's still a great rail, I just use an Aimpoint with it now.

Correct, I'm not sure why some people don't understand that the Eotech with hit the M73 if pushed out any farther

Yes I UNDERSTAND why you dont care for the mount?

My first red dot was a Aimpoint ML2 that sits on a ARMS 39 Gooseneck/QRP

It sat on my A1 Shorty Bushy

I do like my RED DOT sights to sit close to the F.S.

I can see alot better with this set up so I can understand why you would want your Eotech to sit futher out

Thats one reason I bought the 551 over the AA versions so I can get it away from my BUIS

I have a Complete LMT Defender 2000 M4 with SOPMOD I put a Larue cantilever and my ML2 on it

Since I like AIMPOINT the Best

I also replaced my OLD Bushmaster A1 shorty upper with a LMT M4 upper and a Eotech 551

One thing I do like about EOTECH is that you really dont need a Mount for it
and my Bushmaster lower with VLTOR and a LMT M4 upper weighs alot less than the LMT Defender 2000

anyway GOOD LUCK with your Aimpoint

btw Im still on the same Battery on my ML2 I bought it back in 2001

there is a post somewhere in this forum that asks that very same question and I beleive it was only a few days ago.  Look through the back pages and you'll probavly find it.
