They've been using standard pin sizes since the early 90s but before that they were using oversized pivot pins.

The oversized pivot pin will be easy to spot if you have one.  If you don't, however, it isn't a simple swap to add a captured take-down pin up front.  Standard Colt lowers do not have the hole drilled for the spring/detent on the right side of the receiver (top ridge of the "fence"), nor do they have the drain hold for that cavity.  There are AR smiths who will perform the mod for you, but the question is whether or not it's worth it to you to not have to mess with the screwdriver method.

One of the things I hate about Colt lowers.  It runs neck and neck with their asenine decision to go with .170 pins for the FCG instead of .155s like everyone else.

thanks for your reply's & help, i'm getting ready to start my very first build as a newbe, and i,m starting with a new factory colt 14.5 socom barrel with a pinned phantom, now i,m looking for the a good upper to mate it to...any help as to uppers and lowers that i could hook this barrel up with that would be pretty standard as far as being able to swap it if i wanted to?

Barrel to upper interface is standard and upper to lower interface is standard on everything except older civilian Colts.  Even with the older Colts there are adapters available that work fine.  IOW, get whatever upper and lower you want.
