This may be a question for the metalurgy minded among you... Machining properties aside, I understand 410 and 416 stainless are very similar but does the inclusion of sulfer in 416 stainless reduce its mechanical properties in any way? Would the free machining additives make 416 more susceptible to erosion? |
It does seem to be the most common grade for stainless barrels. But I am begining to see a few manufacturers introducing 17-4 or reintroducing 410 stainless which are more difficult to machine than 416. I'm curious if the additives in 416 that make it easier to machine also weaken it compared to the other grades. |
| well according to noveske, 17-4 steel is really hard and eats his tooling alot. So im guessing 416 is definately alot easier to machine and works ok for barrels. Most match barrels are 416. I think part of it is due to the softness of the steel which aides in easier cutting great really smooth rifling. |
Actually, any stainless is actually pretty hard on tooling. |
