I am getting medium contour barrel from CMMG and then cutting it down to 12.5".  Should I go with a carbine gas system or a mid-length gas system?  I would prefer the mid-length, but was worried if 3.5" past the gas port is enough.

I haven't been assimilated yet, but my opinion would be carbine (and I'm very fond of the middies).  I know that when you do the "length math", it seems like the 12.5" mid would be the same as a 10.5" carbine, but since the mid has lower gas pressure than the carbine to begin with, I don't think you have as much room.

I'd personally want the 12.5" with carbine gas system and their micro gas block, and then go with a 10" forend to cover the gas block anyway.  That would leave about 1.5" of barrel between the forend and the suppressor.

Of course you could ask CMMG (if you haven't already).  I had my doubts about a 14.5" mid-length, but CMMG definitely did it.  My confidence in their opinion and abilities is very high.

I love my 14.5" middie, it's my favorite.  I was thinking about getting one of their medcons and having it cut to 14.5" with a rifle forend over it.

Where do I find this "length math"?
