Hey all, I'm thinking of purchasing one of these for my next build. I know they're lightweight. Are there any "down" sides to them? Thanks rich |
As in too much weight? I was looking at the one MSTN offers with the aluminum barrel nut. I just don't need all the extra rail space if all I'm mounting is a bipod and maybe a BUIS. R |
If thats all you need, search Brownells for one that does the same thing for 1/2 the cost. I wouldnt mount a front BUIS on a PRI rail. That rail is there to mount the ARMS PEQ SPR rail. |
Any reason for not using the rail other than that it was meant for something else? Is it machined to a different spec or something? Thanks |
When installing the PEQ rail, the rails on the tube are loosened and moved into place. They move forward, backward, and to a small extent side to side. Not the platform I would want to mount a sight on. ASSuming you align the top rail level when you loctit it in place, it may hold just fine. It may hold. |
Ahhhhhh...gotcha. Well considering this wouldn't be a HSLD type gun (I'm HDLS) where using a BUIS would be life and death, I'd probably be OK. If the LaRue and others are better, why do some still use the PRI? Are there any benefits to the PRI over something from LaRue or DD? Thanks Rich |

PLENTY OF SHOOTERS USE THE PRI COMPETITION FOREND WITH A SHORT RAIL ON TOP FOR THE FRONT SIGHT IN U.S.P.S.A. 3-GUN LIMITED CLASS (IRON SIGHTS ONLY). 18 OUT OF THE TOP 40 AT THE 3-GUN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH IN TACTICAL (ONE OPTIC, SMALL BRAKE) AND LIMITED WERE USING M.S.T.N. UPPERS WITH THE PRI COMPETITION FOREND. DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSION. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |
Wes, can you please show us a photo of the competition forend? I've never seen one, although one ad claimed "No rails or heatshields for lighter weight". I never knew that PRI rails had heatshields inside... I thought the only difference was the alloy nut and no outer rails.

Limited class shooters intentionally decreasing the sight radius by putting the front sight on the forearm? Last time I checked the hot setup was to put the front sight on the end of the barrel to get the most sight radius possible in limited.

MOST SERIOUS LIMITED SHOOTERS DO USE A BARREL OR GAS BLOCK MOUNT FOR THE FRONT SIGHT. STILL, SOME BUY THE AUXILIARY RAIL FOR THE FRONT OF THE FOREND. WE'VE SOLD PLENTY OF BOTH TROY SIGHTS AND LMT FIXED SIGHTS FOR THIS APPLICATION. THE POINT IS THAT THE PRI COMPETITION FORENDS ARE GOOD-TO-GO. WES |
NOT EXACTLY. IT IS REALLY MORE OF A COMPETITION UPPER, SINCE IT HAS THE COMPETITION FOREND AND 18" COMPETITION PROFILE BARREL PLUS MSTN QC BRAKE. SINCE THIS ONE WILL BE USED EXCLUSIVELY WITH FULL POWER AMMO, WE WENT WITHOUT THE ADJUSTABLE GAS BLOCK AND WITH A FULL WEIGHT BOLT CARRIER. YOU ARE CORRECT ON THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SPR AND COMPETITION FORENDS. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |

Thanks, That's sort of like what I've been talking to Paul about. Is the 18" comp. profile the same as the 17" (not counting the obvious diff in length)? What is the cost offset (if any) by going with a non adjustable gas block (I'd be using full power loads as well)? Thanks so much Rich |
