why are so many kits and upper assy heavy barrels? is there some advantage besides lower recoil, and steady off-hand? also, where can I buy an upper assembly with a 20'' "light weight" barrel?

I think cause its cheaper. And those kits are all about cheap.

I agree.  i'd imagine it's easier to produce an HBAR than having to turn down a barrel blank to conform to gov. or M4 profile.

Less time spent between centers, and less tool wear.   Time and tools is money.

But for (hopefully) the vast majority of us, the extra 1 pound should not matter that much.

Better accuracy assuming equal barrel quality which probably won't happen in the really cheap kits.

1 pound on a rifle or carbine makes a HUGE difference in how the gun feels (weight) and how it balances.

Go to a gun store or find a friend that has a very simular gun (1 gun with a Govt profile barrel, and 1 with a HBAR barrel) and ensure that the guns are almost idential to include manufacturer (make sure the stock, handguards, upper reciever, etc. are all the same).  You will quickly notice that 1 pound of weight can make a huge difference in how the gun handles, "feels", and balances.

Once you start adding on rail systems, optics, lights, vertical foregrip, etc, etc, etc. this will amplify the weight problem.

I was just talking to another Detective in my office earlier this week and he was telling me that he wished he had NOT gotten a HBAR.  He was telling me about a recent call where he had to hold a suspect at gun point until the arrest team go to his location.  He stated that his gun got very heavy, very fast.

If a gun rides in the safe all day every day, weight is not an issue, but if it rides in your hands for any period of time you will appriciate the 1 pound of weight savings........Just my .02

As usual, USMC03 is right on.

I find that a VFG helps manage a heavy gun. My "carbine" weighs 8+ pounds and gets HEAVY after a day of shooting.
